There was initially a large hospital and church here, which was eventually destroyed in the Palatinate War in the 17th century. The choir of the original church was then turned into this beautiful chapel, and was given a Baroque renovation. The domed roof and massive windows are a sight to behold, making Wernerkapelle worth a visit.
Constructed in the year 1270, Bischofstein Castle was ravaged in the year 1689 but rebuilt in the year 1930. Fichte Gymnasium purchased Bischofstein Castle in 1954 and presently, it is used as a retreat center by the school. One striking aspect of Bischofstein Castle is its towering cylinder-shaped pillar beset adorned with a white streak of plaster. The chapel in ruins adjoining Bischofstein Castle is also one of its prominent attractions. Bischofstein Castle served as a bastion for Archbishops of Treves. Today, the 800-year old Bischofstein Castle serves as a fine specimen of 1930s' architectural style.
Situated in the city of Oberwesel, Schönburg is an elaborately-built castle that dates back to 911 CE. It was owned by the Dukes of Schönburg for hundreds of years beginning in the 12th Century. The castle remained in their family till it was burnt down by French troops in 1689. After restorations in the 19th Century, the castle was reopened as a hotel. The hotel offers a lavish setting for a memorable holiday with rooms and suites featuring period furnishings and decor. Beautiful views of the Rhine Valley can be seen from some of the hotel rooms. Situated right along the gently flowing Rhine river, Schloss Neuwied stands out with its bright colors, and its open, three wing complex. Always a home for the nobility since its initial construction in 1706, it currently houses the Wied royal family.
