Arundel Castle

This magnificent castle, built by the Earl of Arundel at the end of the 11th Century, is situated in the lovely town of Arundel. Surrounded by well-kept grounds, it contains a collection of 16th-century furniture and artworks by Gainsborough and Van Dyck, among others. The castle has a fascinating history and has links with Mary, Queen of Scots and Henry VIII. There is also a restaurant and a shop.

The Royal Pavilion

With a history as vibrant as its structure itself, the Royal Pavilion is a breathtaking site exuding opulence, and is one of England's most prized possessions. Having once been a leisure palace which housed George IV, the Pavilion is a magnificent canopy of Regency style fused with marvellous influences of Asian architecture. It boasts a striking facade complete with gleaming domes and minarets which give way to highly-decorated rooms adorned with luminescent chandeliers, plush furnishings, and decorative art. Having undergone a major facelift, the palace and its interiors now shine proudly in all their resplendent glory. Further augmented by a tearoom and a lovely expanse of gardens crafted in Regency style, the Royal Pavilion offers a glimpse of the architectural legacy of Asia, right in the heart of Brighton.

Preston Manor

Preston Manor evokes the "Upstairs, Downstairs" atmosphere of an Edwardian gentry home. There are more than 20 rooms over four floors, all superbly renovated, from the servants' quarters, kitchens and butler's pantry to attic bedrooms and nursery. Notable collections of silver, furniture, portraits and other memorabilia give a rare insight into the conventions of Edwardian upper-class life. Also features walled garden, pet cemetery and 13th-century parish church.

Brighton Pier

Opened just one year before the turn of the 20th century, Brighton Pier is the only pier in the city that remains operational to this day. It was the vision of architect R St George Moore and quickly garnered attention as one of the top attractions in Brighton. Not much has changed in the way of its popularity, and visitors continue to flock to the pier for its rollercoasters, trampolines, carousel, and other thrilling activities. The perfect locale for a fun-filled family day, Brighton Pier also offers seasonal attractions like a haunted house, as well as exciting special events from time to time. A bite at any of the onsite restaurants rounds out the perfect Brighton Pier experience.

The Chattri

Isolated and inaccessible by car, but well worth the walk over the South Downs from either Ditchling Beacon or Stanmer Park. Set in a natural bowl, this is a Sicilian marble memorial with an elegant classical dome designed by E C Henriques dedicated to the memory of the Hindu and Sikh soldiers who died in hospital in Brighton during World War I.

Volks Railway

Built and opened in 1883 by local inventor Magnus Volk, this was the first public electric railway in the UK. It runs from Brighton Pier to Black Rock, near Brighton Marina, considerably more than its original quarter-mile journey. The track is right next to the beach and it is a lovely little ride along the seafront in open-sided carriages. A long running and ever popular attraction.
