"Historic Defensive Wall of Chepstow"

Chepstow Port Wall was constructed in the late 13th Century by Roger Bigod, 5th Earl of Norfolk. At the time of its construction, Chepstow was renown as a trading center, and the wall was intended to serve the dual purposes of defense against attacks and to ensure that only those who had paid the requisite taxes could access the market. When complete, the wall stretched across a distance of 1,100 meters (3,600 feet), with battlements on the top, at least 11 semi-circular towers and a single point of entry at the Town Gate. The complete wall survived until 1846 after which a number of sections were torn down to allow for the expansion and development of the town. Today, sections of the wall which still stand are accessible to visitors.
