De Markten

"HQ of Flemish Life in Brussels"

This impressive building on Vieux Marché aux Grains, formerly a manufacturer of crystal vases, is the headquarters of Flemish life in Brussels. The original language in this city is (a charming dialect of) Dutch, but during the 19th century the language became oppressed. Everything that reeked of power and influence happened in French, so every ambitious person was obliged to use that same language. Thus Brussels Frenchified. Until not so long ago, it was usual that a Flemish person visiting Brussels automaticaly spoke French in every shop and in every bar, but things have changed. As Flanders, the northern part of the country, has become the most prosperous, Dutch is reconquering the city. De Markten (The Markets) is the centre of this new Flemish presence. Flemish organisations have meetings here every night, but there are also always interesting exhibitions, and there's a very nice bar.
