Established in 1943, Théâtre du Rideau (Curtain Theater) is now probably the most distinguished French-speaking theater group in the country. The actors perform in the magnificent Palais des Beaux-Arts. Founded by actor Claude Etienne, the group has always remained at the forefront of contemporary theater, having produced the first French performances of Tennessee Williams's A Streetcar Named Desire. Etienne died shortly before the group's grand 50th anniversary celebration.
