The island first formed from the silt and rocks carried by the river and was inhabited off and on from 89 BCE when it was the base for a legion of Ancient Romans. Today, the island is renowned all over the world for the week-long Sziget Festival which has been held here on an annual basis since 1993. During the festival famous musicians from across the world meet and exchange the gift of music.
