Located near Delaware Park, the building is a good example of Wright's Prairie style. Other structures on the complex include the Barton House, with original interior wood and art glass, a covered walkway connecting the main house with the conservatory and a gardener's cottage.
Part of the Niagara Parks Botanical Gardens administered by the Niagara Parks Commission, the Butterfly Conservatory has become world-renowned in the years that it has been open. Featured in the exhibit are more than 2000 free-roaming butterflies that include 65 different species. These jewel-like creatures float through a tropical setting that visitors to the establishment are free to explore. Visitors walk along with a series of pathways filled with tropical plants that culminate at a huge waterfall. Audio tours are available in six languages for those who would like to learn a bit more about these fascinating insects.
The Bird Kingdom is an indoor free-flying aviary and is the world's largest of this kind. It is located on the periphery of the Horseshoe Falls. Table Rock Welcome Centre is an observation center, from where the gushing water can be heard and witnessed. The four-dimensional film 'Journey Behind the Falls' is screened here, giving visitors an experience of being behind the curtain of the falls. These stunning botanical gardens feature more than 40 hectares (100 acres) of meticulously kept gardens attracting more than one million visitors annually. Known as Niagara's "Other Water Wonder", this aquarium presents an ongoing display of fish and aquatic life from the Great Lakes to the Coral Reef. There are almost 2,000 species ranging from sharks and California sea lions to Atlantic bottlenose dolphins. Originally known as the "First Inland Oceanarium" when it opened 30 years ago, the aquarium has grown to over 50 exhibits. Visitors stop to watch the marine demonstrations at 90-minute intervals.
A tribute to the vision of Father Nelson H. Baker, this church was the second in the U.S. to receive a basilica designation in 1926. Located in Lackawanna, the basilica's copper-topped dome and twin bell towers can be seen for miles. The church was built reminiscent of the 15th-16th century Renaissance-style, featuring a French Baroque interior. There is a gift shop where you can buy books, crucifixes, mugs and Father Baker's most popular statue of Our Lady of Victory.
Located in the Great Gorge, the Niagara Glen Nature Areas form a beautiful natural park with its varied flora and fauna. Heartland Forest opened its doors in 2004. It was founded by Dan Bowman who bought a land in 1999 and transformed it into a Carolinian forest with a nature center, trails, tree houses, a stream, frog and turtle ponds and ephemeral pools. Besides these, the park also has picnic spots, a butterfly garden, playground, observation stations, restrooms and a mini-putt. Spread across 37.64 hectares (93 acres), it is home to a wide variety of trees, birds, amphibians and other animals. Explore the forest on foot, with interpretive signs along the way. The environment-friendly nature center has a woodworking shop, an art studio, a nature store and snack bar. Heartland Forest annually hosts five events that garnered a lot of attention. They are the WinterFest, Frogfest, Hoedown, PumpkinFest and Christmas Tree Party. It is a fun place to be and learn more about nature in a wonderful environ. So bring along your family with your dog in tow for a memorable time in the outdoors.
