O'Doherty's Keep

"Medieval tower house with links to past"

This keep (" stronghold ", literally) is a fine example of a medieval tower house. Built on the site of a Norman fort, the keep was captured after the rebellion of Sir Cahir O'Doherty and given to Sir Arthur Chichester. The Vaughan family were the final inhabitants until 1718, when a new manor house was built by them close-by. Given its 600-years age, the keep is in reasonable condition - though it does not have a roof. Most of the fortifications and gun-slots are still intact; inside a fireplace and staircase are accessible. Open throughout the year, there is no admission charge. The phone number of Buncrana Tourist Office is given for more facts/information.
