It is located in southwestern New South Wales in a region marked by sandy plains, sand dune systems, and red clay plains. The park's geological attractions date back as far as 500,000 years. Reptiles and mammals that thrive in the ancient land range from pygmy possums to greater long-eared bats to southern spinifex slender blue-tongue lizards. Although Mallee Cliffs National Park is closed to visitors in accordance with its conservation efforts, school tours and research access are possible with permission.
