"Ruinous Castle"
Benington Castle was once a motte and bailey castle established by Peter de Valoignes in the 12th Century, however evidence suggests that the site of Benington has been fortified since the Saxon period. Although the castle was torn down in 1212, sections of the castle have survived and are still visible. Currently the castle lies with the estate of Benington Lordship where in 1832 George Proctor constructed a summer house, gatehouse and curtain wall. The estate remains privately owned and public access is not permitted. However, the Edwardian style gardens are occasionally made open to the public during specific events, at which time the castle ruins may be visited.
