Castillo San Felipe de Barajas

A majestic piece of architecture, the San Felipe de Barajas Castle is a fortification built in the 1600's in honor of the Spanish monarch, King Felipe IV. This stone fort is a magnificent feat in engineering for its time and was built in order to repel land attacks by the English Crown. Visitors can explore its mysterious underground passages, sentry boxes and chambers where food and munitions were stored. The descent down its 27 meters (88.6 feet) deep stairwell traverses narrow and low corridors. The high towers and turrets of the castle, on the other hand, offer a stunning, panoramic view of the city. Visitors can also relive the heroic deeds of those times by means of the spectacular light and sound shows. Towering palm trees surround the stunning castle, and the site has established itself as a well-known tourist attraction.

Plaza de la Aduana

It is located within the Ciudad Amurallada (Walled City) surrounded also by banks and other financial institutions. The statue of Christopher Columbus stands at its centre. The current office of the Mayor is situated along the walled stretch of the square, which is one of the widest of its kind in the city. The "Customs Plaza" was named after the former customs house. Its spaciousness is ideal for the musical concerts and poetry competitions with nationally renowned artists.

Plaza Santo Domingo

This well-known square is named after Santo Domingo's church, which faces it. Famous for the local celebrities, dignitaries and international jet set who have visited here, it is the ideal place to spend a quiet afternoon, have a heartfelt chat with friends or spend a romantic evening. Surrounded by outdoor cafes and creperías (crepe shops), musicians and poets help evoke a Parisian square. The bohemian and artistic atmosphere is the perfect accompaniment for a bottle of wine. A statue of Venus, rendered by Colombian's popular artist Fernando Botero, stands on one corner.

Plaza de los Coches

The "Plaza of Carriages" is a romantic square located around the back of the Torre del Reloj (Clock Tower), and is the main entrance to the Walled City. Facing this square is the Portal de los Dulces (Gateway of Sweets), a gallery where typical sweets of the region are sold. Two important landmarks of the city, the Muelle de los Pegasos and the Camellón de los Mártires are found behind the plaza. Pedro de Heredia, Cartagena's founder stands in watch in the centre of this plaza, named for the abundance of horse carriages which transported people in colonial times. Today it is populated with street performers, religious speakers and true literary gatherings led by prominent figures of the city.

Quiebra Canto Café Galería

This is one of Cartagena's more diverse café galleries. Music from the world's five continents sounds out in a bohemian atmosphere, which seems to appeal to tourist guides and their entourage of tourists. Thursday and Friday is classic film night, to enjoy a "flick" while downing a cold brew with an international crowd. There is a clear view of the city's Camellón de los Mártires (Avenue of the Martyrs) and the city's landmark Reloj Público (Public Clock).

Museo de Arte Moderno de Cartagena

The Museo Latinoamericano de Arte Moderno (Latin American Museum of Modern Art) was founded in 1959, but it was not until 1980 when it finally found a place to call its own in the old colonial cellars of the port. Now known as the Cartagena Modern Art Museum it is housed in a large republican-style house where rustic walls display the works of national and international artists. The permanent collection mainly consists of paintings by national artists. Among the Cartageneros there are some Enrique Grau and Alejandro Obregón pieces.

Admission: General: $500 Tuesdays: Free admission.
