Known in French as the Quartier des Habous, the new Medina or new town is a beautiful marketplace in Casablanca located in the southeastern part of the city. About four kilometers (two miles) southeast of the city center, the new Medina is a very popular tourist destination thanks to the Moroccan charm it exudes. Records indicate that the new Medina was constructed around 1923 to provide citizens with a central place to gather. Today the new Medina is a narrow cluster of winding streets filled with nifty arcades, artisans and shops. It is considered a shopper's haven.
Located in the heart of the city, the Exposition Nationale d'Artisanat is the perfect stop if you're looking to pick up a few souvenirs or to browse the arts and crafts. Unlike some of the markets, prices here are fixed, so if you're determined to bargain for the best deal, then this isn't the place. However, if you're satisfied with a fixed price, then the Exposition Nationale d'Artisanat is a three-story treasure trove of local products and other odds and ends. This really is a shopper's paradise.

The cinema at the American Language Centre is not a cinema in the conventional sense. Here you can see films on a specially installed screen within a Berber tent outside the language school. The films are shown on Fridays and Saturdays. Originally installed for students, the screenings are now open to anyone. For information, come to the center and look on the blackboard. This is a very particular cinematic experience, which is most enjoyable. The ALC is one of the few places in town were you can have a serious, long-lasting and enchanting conversation in English (if you miss it, that is). The bookstore's staff are more than happy to be engaged in a conversation to improve their English. Besides this bonus, the shop stocks a good selection of English paperbacks, travel guides, maps and picture-books of Morocco.
This is Morocco's largest bookstore although you wouldn't think so from the entrance. It has a varied collection ranging from classic Arabic literature to Spanish, French and English literature, cookery books to crime novels, dictionaries and travel guides. It also has a good selection of academic literature which many of Morocco's Universities take advantage of. Ordering books is also quite easy here. One member of staff speaks excellent Spanish and Dutch, which could also come in handy for some shoppers.
