Washpool National Park was gazetted in 1983 for the special wildlife found in the Washpool and Gibraltar Range forests. The park protects all fauna and flora, from ringtail possums and swamp wallabies to rufous scrubs and powerful owls. A nature walker's paradise, Washpool offers several trails of varying difficulty, including a World Heritage walk that connects the Gibraltar range to Washpool and a part of the Bicentennial National trail. The land was once used as a travel route by the Bundjalung, Ngarrabul, and Gumbaingirri peoples. Visitors have the option to set up camp at the renowned Coombadjhda site and sleep under the stars.
