Volcán de Colima is one of the most active volcanoes in central and North America that has erupted close to 40 times in the last four hundred years. Standing over 12,533 feet (3,820 meters) tall, the volcano is one of North America's tallest land forms. Its name might suggest that it entirely lies in the state of Colima, however a vast majority of its mass is situated in the state of Jalisco. Its history dates back five million years ago and has undergone a series of periodic compositional changes which include the cluster of parasitic domes that are settled on its northeastern flank. The domes are collectively called the 'El Volcancito'. The volcano's magnificence can be best witnessed from the Colima Volcano Observatory that lies within the University of Colima campus.
