Popular which has a chain of stores distributed throughout the country and the region, bills itself as "the bilingual bookstore" and stocks a wide variety of English and Mandarin books. It is particularly well known for its extensive range of textbooks, assessment books, simulated exam papers and stationery, making it a godsend to students and anxious parents. Popular is also home to CD Rama, its audio-visual entertainment section. Computer accessories are also sold here. There are more than 25 branches island-wide.
The largest Kinokuniya store outside of Japan, the Singapore location of this famous bookseller has an awesome inventory of books and periodicals-English, Japanese, French and German-and is a veritable rabbit warren of bookshelves. Shoppers have been known to need help finding the exit. Special in-house events in addition to the usual book signing sessions are held regularly. Wine-tasting, anyone? There is also a good in-house cafe where you can stop for a snack. The store also provides a website, Bookweb, which allows you to check if a title is in stock and reserve it before heading down to browse the shelves in-person.
Established in 2005, the independent bookstore, Booksactually is located on Yong Siak Street. Offering a plethora of books, magazines and various other ephemera, the shop is almost exclusively dedicated to Literature. If you're looking for some extremely rare literary gems, this is probably where you will find them. Apart from this, there is a range of delightful stationery on offer, such as hand-stitch notebooks, postcards, woven bags and much more.
