The Asia Society of Hong Kong

The Hong Kong branch of the Asia Society is located in the heart of the city and is housed in a former 19th-century factory, once used by the British military to store explosives and munitions. Tung Wah Museum

Tung Wah Museum displays Hong Kong's early medical development. It has two exhibition halls, displaying medical equipment used in the early colonial period. The museum also stocks old hand-written medicine books, which is a precious archive for history fans. Moreover, the architecture of Tung Wah combines both features of Western and Chinese buildings. The inner halls of Tung Wah are decorated with fancy Chinese woodcuts, conveying the meaning of Ji Xiang, 'good luck'. The outside, however, for the purpose of lighting, uses windows and pillars of Western Style. If visitors are interested in local history, then don't miss Tung Wah Museum!

Po Leung Kuk Museum

Po Leung Kuk, which means 'informal police' in Cantonese, was founded by voluntary male citizens for protecting neighborhoods from frequent crime during the colonial period. This civilian organization is still around today, no longer dealing with misdoings, but serving as the largest social benefits and charity group in Hong Kong. Po Leung Kuk Museum displays utilities, archives and photos of early times, showing the life of ordinary people in 19th century. Visitors can not take pictures in the museum, but well-prepared guided tours are available. This is a fun place to discover Hong Kong history!

Hong Kong Museum of History

One of the top museums in town and also free of charge for its permanent exhibits, Hong Kong Museum of History chronicles 400 million years of this island's history. That is indeed a massive amount of time to explore and understand. Spread across eight galleries, this bi-level repository is like stepping on a time-travel machine. Dioramas, multimedia exhibits and graphic panels give insight into the topography, nature, culture, history and growth of Hong Kong. With thousands of objects creating a storyline that is exciting and engaging, there is probably no other museum in the city that is as comprehensive as the Hong Kong Museum of History. They also have special exhibitions at times. However they have an entrance fee to it.
