Medelhavsmuseet

Medelhavsmuséet is a great place to see art and artifacts from the ancient Mediterranean civilizations. The pride of the museum is the Cypriot collection, proclaimed as the largest collection of native art outside Cyprus. Other impressive artifacts date back to the times of the Egyptian Pharaohs, and early civilizations in Cyprus, Greece and Rome.

Museum of Far Eastern Antiquities

With the joint initiative by archaeologist Johan Gunnar Andersson and Sweden's Parliament, Museum of Far Eastern Antiquities was established in 1926. The collection gives an insight into a variety of Asian classical art, archaeology and culture. The museum also has a public library with an extensive collection of Asian research books.

Waldemarsudde

Built in the former mansion of Prince Eugen, a Swedish painter and art collector, Waldemarsudde is an art museum housed inside an historic building. Not only does the museum showcase antique furnishings set the same way as they were in the times of Prince Eugen but visitors also get the chance to glimpse at a number of his original artworks. Besides stepping back in to see the life and works of Prince Eugen himself, visitors also get the chance to browse through paintings by his contemporaries as well as other contemporary artists. Sculptures by Carl Milles are also scattered all over the garden. To make more sense of the numerous exhibits, hiring a tour guide is advisable. Creative workshops for children are also organized here for children and young adults beginning summer.

The Thielska Gallery

The Thielska Gallery was an estate, which belonged to Ernst Thiel, a successful banker and one of Stockholm's most visible art patrons. Post World War I, he lost most of his fortune as the stock market crashed, and his estate and art works were bought by the state. Now, apart from temporary exhibitions, his permanent collections, which include work by Strindberg and Munch are on display. This gallery has turn-of-the-century feel and is certainly worth a visit.
