Museu da Imagem e do Som (Museum of Image and Sound) in Rio was the first of its kind in the country and was established in 1965, after which several others followed suit in other cities. It has an impressive collection of images and sound that includes in various forms such as caricatures, recordings, gramaphones, musical instruments, drawings, books and discs that are related to the cultural history of Brazil. Most of these media documents were donated to the museum. There are also some personal mementos of artists such as Ernesto Nazareth's piano, Elizeth Cardoso's costumes and more. The exhibits also showcases forgotten artists belonging to Brazil's Golden Age of Radio such as the Batista sisters. Museu da Imagem e do Som regularly conducts educational videos, lectures and other activities to promote cultural awareness among Rio's citizens.
Formerly the house of 19th-century scholar Rui Barbosa, Casa Rui Barbosa spells magnificence in every aspect. The entire mansion is beautifully painted in pink and has a vast collection of scholarly books and literature material, a garden, a library for children, and a museum. Witness a host of cultural events taking place including the concert series of Brasiliana, personal archives of Osman Lins, book fairs and guided tours around the mansion. Admission is free.
Carmen Miranda lovers unite! This small kitsch museum is located at the very southern tip of the Parque do Flamengo. Highlights include memorabilia from the famed singer's life and career. The infamous fruity headdresses are among the singer's paraphernalia and exquisite costumes that are on exhibit. Posters, postcards, T-shirts, and music are on sale as well.
The life of Brazil's most internationally known classical composer, Heitor Villa-Lobos (1887-1959) is celebrated here. Located in Botafogo, in a century-old building, the exhibit includes some of his personal belongings and original musical scores. You can also listen to an extensive musical archive as well as purchase CDs or tapes of his music. Entry is free.
