Founded in 1835 by François Bartholoni, Conservatoire de Musique de Genève is a premiere music school located in downtown Geneva. It also enjoys the honor of being the oldest institution dedicated to education in the field of music in the country. The internationally acclaimed music event, Geneva International Music Competition was formed at this very prestigious institute in 1939. The place plays host to several music events and concerts throughout the year.
Bâtiment des Forces Motrices, an opera house, is famous not only for its cultural events, but also its picturesque location. It is situated in the middle of the River Rhône. Constructed in the 19th Century, it was originally meant to be a water pumping and hydroelectric station. One can still spot two turbines in the lobby of the establishment. Set up in 1971 the AMR provides workshops in music which promote improvisation in new sounds and styles. This organization was set up to promote music in the country and has succeeded. The Association pour l'Encouragement de la Musique Improvisée organizes various concerts promoting upcoming artists and performers as well as organizing various workshops to help brush up ones skills in music.
