Topolini

Maybe it is a little bit generous to call this a beach but all the same, every year this walkway is literally under siege from thousands of people of all ages from Trieste. They come to stretch their towels out and catch the sun. The walkway goes from Barcola up to the junction with the road leading to the Castello di Miramare. The walkway is made up of a series of semicircuar terraces which sit above the main street. Below the street there are cement benches and two small pebble beaches. Further up towards the junction, people sit out and enjoy the sun only three meters away from the main road into the city. There are even topless sunbathers there. There are shower and bathing facilities available as well as some changing areas. If you come here between July and August, finding a space for your towel becomes like finding a garaging space in the city center in rush-hour. Even walking about becomes difficult because the place packed with large groups of students. Of course it is free to use and there is no timetable, although swimming at night is forbidden. However, it is a relaxing and pleasant place to go for a walk throughout the year. There is disabled access to the sea.

Canale Grande

Canale Grande is a waterway located in the heart of the city. It was built during the 18th Century by Venetian Matteo Pirona. It was built in a way that boats could directly get to the center of the city. It was a common point to unload and offload goods. The canal is quite long today and has reached up to the church of St Anthony. It is one of the main tourist attractions and is wonderful for photography.

Marina San Giusto

It is always nice to come to Trieste, but coming by sea is even better. This is the only tourist port in the province, where tourists can dock their boats and find themselves directly in the heart of the city. It is near Piazza dell'Unità d'Italia, the oldest European square facing the sea. The port has space for 231 boats and hulls for six to 22 meters long. The cost is low, even in comparison to the nearby Croatian and Slovenian ports and there is even a modern shipyard which offers all kinds of repairs.

Lanterna di Trieste

Near the city center, this is the only beach in Europe where there is a barrier separating an area reserved for women and children from an area reserved for men. This is considered a piece of history, and is like a monument. Apart from this detail, there are no special facilities here, yet hundreds of people come here daily after the office or for a relaxing day out. The entrance fee is extremely cheap and there is a peaceful atmosphere, as well as equipment to facilitate disabled access into the sea.

Porto San Rocco

Porto San Rocco is the pride of Muggia, a small and enchanting Venetian town on the edge of the province not far from the border with Slovenia. Porto San Rocco was a project born from the dreams of many but took 15 years to blossom. This tourist seaside resort is among the most exclusive on the Adriatic coast. Around 400 apartments in harmony with the surrounding area as well as restaurants, sports grounds, beaches, and other great comforts characterize this area which promises to be a real hotspot for summer tourism in Friuli-Venezia-Giulia. Financed by a group of entrepreneurs, Porto San Rocco is one of the many examples of how renovation transforms an unused setting with the potential to be pristine. During the post-war period, the area was in fact a huge shipyard, noted throughout Europe.
