Lovat bookshop is a large bookstore, the biggest one in Trieste, positioned on the third level of Oviesse, a clothing store. First of all, you have a beautiful view from the window of the bookshop, so you can pass your time searching the books in calm and relaxation. The level is divided in different blocks, each dedicated to a particular subject: novels, poetry, fiction, art and architecture, philosophy, history, geography, religion and so on. Lovat has a good selection, so you'll surely find what you want. There is also a little spot where you can read the newspaper or just take a rest.
This small bookshop is situated in the city center, and specializes in manuals, quality literature and university publications. It has most of the books which are needed at Trieste's university and is therefore always full of students and professionals. The sections dedicated to history, art, business, essays, science, IT, and above all local history, are also very well-stocked. The range of dictionaries and other reference books is huge. In the few shelves which are dedicated to fiction, most of the space is taken up by Einaudi editions, but there are many other books, from the best Italian and foreign literature to inexpensive "pocket-sized" books. The CD department has had a lot of success probably due to its very affordable prices. There are also posters and t-shirts for sale. The staff is young and knowledgeable, and they offer an ordering service which enables customers to order books from any publishing house and receive them very quickly. Payment by installments is available in certain cases, and some times you can get a 10% discount on cover prices.
This is a place that has to be visited, and not just by bookworms. In fact, this bookshop is much more than just a simple shop, it is a museum, a piece of the city's history. It was founded just after the Second World War by one of Trieste's most famous poets, Umberto Saba (1883-1957). He was an important poet from Venezia Giulia, and more importantly of 20th-century Italy, and he made this bookshop become famous all over the country. Nothing has changed in this shop since the day it was opened, and even the atmosphere that you breath in is very suggestive and fascinating. Saba made this bookshop into a meeting place for Trieste's intellectuals such as Svevo, Stuparich and Giotti, and high caliber Italian authors like Levi, Montale, and Comisso. The poet liked to define his shop as "an escape from all the horrors of the time". Nowadays the efficient aspects of a modern bookshop are blended in with the old books and the traditions of this shop which must not be lost. It is a gold mine for antique and rare book collectors. The location is also good, situated at a few paces from the spectacular Piazza dell'Unità d'Italia and right in the middle of a pedestrian zone. Today this bookshop is run by Mario Cerne, son of Carlo, who was the poet's colleague since 1924.
This Catholic bookshop continues the tradition left by the founder of the Istituto Pia Societa di San Paolo, Don Alberione. Le Paoline has been in this city since 1931, and offers not only thousands of historical and religious titles, but also many interesting books on children's education, and philosophy and psychology books. For Trieste's Catholic community it is real point of reference. There are also literature sections, always based on religion and the promotion of Christian values. There are also books which help people to understand a society in constant change and which demonstrate the necessity of evangelism in this new society. The staff is qualified and the shop is in a central position, along one of Trieste's main shopping streets.
