Staatsschauspiel Dresden or State Playhouse Dresden is a historical theater with over a hundred years of existence. Built in 1913, its design represents the Neo Baroque and Art Nouveau style of architecture. Since its inception, this state theater has always staged diverse performances and artists from all over the world have performed here. Classic plays like The Merchant of Venice, plays depicting ideologies of socialism and other similar acts have been presented here.
Established in 1947, the Staatsoperette Dresden has been the only opera theatre in the vicinity that functions independently. A part of Kraftwerk Mitte Dresden, this 700-seat theatre features operas, theatrical plays, and musicals with world-renowned artists gracing the occasion with their presence. They have also won an award in 2016 for staging the show Der Zarevich.
The Theater Junge Generation offers a piece of art for everyone right from children to adolescents and adults. For several years theatre has been doing puppetry as well as cinema screenings. The children events take place during the daylight hours, and there are occasionally special screenings for schools and other large groups. Theatre plays a big roll in this venue s identity, too; every year in fall they host the Theater Market, a huge spectacle with music, games and all kinds of theatre-related activities.
Established in 1911 as Festspielhaus Hellerau, it has undergone radical transformations since its inception. A prime example of Dresden's extensive cultural history, it has been home to gymnasts, avant-garde artists, and decades of military occupation. Festspielhaus Hellerau is now known as Hellerau - Europäisches Zentrum der Künste and is a cultural powerhouse. From theatrical productions, concerts, dance shows to showcasing the best of contemporary art in the region, it is a dynamic space in every sense.
