Behind the counter of this bar stand three generations of the same family. Following the custom of San Sebastian's Day every January the 20th, they organize a tamborrada (drumming procession through the streets). The bar's owners display their spirit by decorating the bar with blue and white, the town's colors. On its walls, works from local artists are displayed and for sale. They specialize in jaliscos, original Basque tapas made of fried ham topped with a mushroom that resemble a Mexican sombrero.
An elegant lounge bar spread over two floors where you can sample some of the world's finest whiskies and strong liquors to the sound of live piano music and song. Relax on a comfortable sofa and chat with friends, while checking out the massive collection of unique and interesting bottles decorating the walls. You'll be mixing with a clientele in their mid-30s and older. Teas, coffees and mixed drinks are prepared and served with style.
Located opposite City Hall in a pedestrian area near La Kabutzia disco, this place invokes the splendor of the summer season in San Sebastian during the 30's and 40's. Back then, the cafe was called Maxim's, and its decor still resembles the well known Parisian restaurant. During the summer, the elegant cafe terrace at Dioni's has a touch of the Belle Époque. It's decorated in blue wood with wall lamps and intimate little tables, and has a romantic air about it.
Since its inception, Bar Haizea has been the neighborhood's go-to place for a relaxed round of drinks and a light meal. Situated at the heart of the historic district, its old-school vibes, coupled with its lively atmosphere makes it perfect for a casual meal and drinks with friends. Best known for their tapas, and Basque-style dishes, this is one of the best spots for a no-frills, local-inspired meal. At the bar, one can take their pick from their collection of imported spirits, wines, and beers, or from their signature mixed drinks.
One of the most popular specialized bars in town, La Gintonería Donostiarra is the place to be when you crave for an exclusive cocktail. Dimly lit and peppered with contemporary tones, this is the perfect spot for a light-hearted drinking session, after a busy day. As the name alludes, Gin is the protagonist at this bar. Boasting a lengthy list of imported Gins and exclusive Gin-based concoctions, this is where you are certain to find a drink that suits your palate.
Le Bukowski Musika Kluba not only offers great music for the ears, but also provides a visual treat. As you step foot in Bukowski, opulence greets you; as you move in, a gorgeously designed Dining Room and bar awaits you. You sip the most intricately blended cocktail, while treating your ears to the best of music. More popular as a music club, Bukowski's concert nights are to watch out for. Rock lovers can have a ball while others can swing to the beats of in-house DJs. Clubbing at San Sebastian remains incomplete without a night at Bukowski Musika Kluba.
This little bar tucked away in the Parte Vieja is part jazz club part discoteca. Most weekend nights, the bar invites either jazz performers or a well-known DJ to spin in the dance room downstairs. Upstairs is a small bar with seating, where the music is more low-key and people can sit and chat. The two different atmospheres are what makes this bar different and very popular: on weekend nights, or any night in the popular summer season, this bar is packed to the gills with both locals and tourists looking for a change from the house music that is played nearly everywhere else.
The perfect place to go for pintxos (Basque tapas) before lunch or dinner; Bar La Cepa is very popular with tourists. Behind the long counter are many experienced waiters, so the service is very good and fast. This is a key feature for any place as big and busy as this one. Bullfighting posters on the walls and cured hams hanging from the ceiling make it very picturesque. Their deli items, particularly the cured ham, and their hot pintxos, such as their brocheta de champiñones y bacon (bacon and mushrooms on a skewer) are highly recommended. As for the wine, choose from the great variety of Rioja wines on display.
