Museo Civico di Castelvecchio

Castelvecchio was founded in the mid 14th century at the behest of Cangrande II della Scala, as a princely residence with fortress, and was called Castle of San Martino in Aquaro because it incorporated a small church dedicated to the saint. Around the beginning of the 15th century, after the viscounts built two forts on the hills (St. Peter and St. Felix), it acquired its current name. Over the centuries, it continued to have military functions - with the domination of Venice, it was the seat of an academy; with Napoleon, two new wings were added to the building. Then, with the Austrians, it played a strategic role in the general plan of fortification of Verona. In the 1920s, Verona municipality decided to move its medieval and modern art sections of the Civic Museum to Castelvecchio. The present layout of the building and its exhibitions are the result of a major rehabilitation and construction, between 1956 and 1964, by the architect Carlo Scarpa.

Casa di Giulietta

This obligatory port of call for any visitor to Verona is said to be the very residence that inspired Shakespeare in writing his most famous star-crossed lovers. Built in the 13th Century, this Gothic-style home once belonged to the dell Capello family, which fans of Romeo and Juliet will notice sounds strikingly similar to Juliet's last name: Capulet. It was built on the remains of a Roman insula, an ancient urban housing unit, and today plays host to a small museum filled with antiques from the 16th Century on. The site's famous balcony overlooks a courtyard renovated by Antonio Avena in 1935, which also features a bronze Juliet statue created by sculptor Nereo Costantini. History buffs and literature lovers often stop for a photo in front of the historic and romantic Casa di Giulietta.

Fondazione Museo Miniscalchi Erizzo

Fondazione Museo Miniscalchi Erizzo is housed in the 15th-century palace of the same name in the Via Mamaso. It exhibits the furnishings and rich art collections of an ancient family. The 15 rooms, containing furnishings from the 16th and 18th Centuries, house numerous, varied collections. They are all organized by theme. Some of the rooms contain important archaeological finds from the Etruscan and Roman periods, including bronzes, glassware, ceramics and coins. Other rooms contain weapons and armor from the 16th and 17th Centuries while in others paintings and drawings by Venetian masters of the 16th and 17th Centuries are displayed. The Portrait of Nicolò Erizzo by Alessandro Longhi is one that particularly stands out.

Museo archeologico al teatro romano

Often mistaken as the Roman Theater, Museo Archeologico del Teatro Romano is located adjacent to this famous landmark. Set in a 15th-century convent, this museum opened its doors in 1924. Many of the items from the collection from donated and several of them were excavated from the Teatro Romano di Verona. Segregated into 10 zones, it gives an insight into an ancient era and its lifestyle. From sculptures to ceramics, ruins, funerary items and decorative elements, the displays are an excellent source for a peek into the past.

Museo Africano

The Museo Africano was founded by the Combonian missionaries in 1938 to give value to the materials which had been collected during their missions. The materials show the culture and daily life of the African populations. In 1996 the display area was radically changed. From a classical ethnographic museum, which stood out for its interesting but rather sterile displays, it was made into a center for communication and intercultural dialogue. Thanks to radical restructuring and the use of modern multimedia techniques, the museum now offers a positive and unusual picture of the African continent.

Museo delle carrozze dell'Ottocento

Who hasn't dreamt of taking a ride in a carriage like lucky Cindrella? Sadly, in today's world, such a dream is difficult to realize. So the next best thing is to indulge your dreams and visit the carriage museum. These antiques have only been exhibited at the agricultural fair and at horse exhibitions. They don't only exist in a "dream world". There are many interesting old carriage models as well as carts which were used by old farmers in the Veronese countryside.
