The square shape and creative sculptures in front make the Taipei Fine Arts Museum easy to identify. This is the first and only museum in Taipei to showcase modern art. It consists of 24 galleries and is said to be larger than the National Palace Museum in terms of interior space. The art exhibits, which include the work of international and Taiwanese artists, change every few months. The gift shop sells artwork and numerous souvenirs that make great gifts for friends and relatives.
Museum of Contemporary Art Taipei (MOCA) is counted as one of the city's premier venues for modern art. Housed in a 1921-built structure that formerly served as Jan Cheng Elementary School, the museum opened to the public in the year 2001. Ever since, the museum has become an ideal venue for riveting exhibitions featuring works of renowned international and local artists. Along with some fine exhibits of the contemporary work, it also showcases time-honoured architectural displays and other historical artifacts. In the year 2010, it joined hands with Shanghai's Museum of Contemporary Art in a bid to promote the local artistic talent on a wider scale.
Located in the city's Zhongzheng district, the Taipei Artist Village is a sprawling artist residency that was established in 2001. The village gives both local and international artists a creative platform to share and exchange ideas and develop individual projects. The village has an accommodation on site, replete with basic amenities. The campus also includes a multi-functional performance hall, art studio, dance hall and exhibition galleries. Regular art exhibitions and art festivals are held here.
