A visit to Jakarta is incomplete without paying a visit to these beautiful places each having its unique charm. Dive into the city's colonial heritage, where Dutch architecture still graces the streets, serving as a living testament to its history. Pay homage to the nation's martyrs, a poignant reminder of Indonesia's struggle for independence. A visit to the grand mosques not only offers insight into religious beliefs but also showcases architectural brilliance. To enrich your cultural understanding, explore renowned museums that house contemporary art and provide a glimpse into the country's banking history. Don't forget retail therapy in the city's sprawling shopping malls where you can take back home a bag full of souvenirs.

Freedom Square

Home to the National Monument, Lapangan Merdeka measures one square kilometer and ranks as one of the world's largest squares. With government buildings and Jakarta's major thoroughfares lining its four sides, it makes for a very pleasant and picturesque stroll on a cool day. The park conceals a long history. From a grazing field it became a military training ground in 1809. It was then renamed Koningsplein (King's Square) in 1816 and Lapangan Gambir toward the end of the 19th century, during which it also hosted an annual night fair. Finally, it became the Freedom Square in 1975.

Monas (National Monument)

Bearing an enormous scale of 132 meters (433 feet), and topped with flame-shaped gold of monumental proportions, this imposing obelisk is an emblematic landmark of Jakarta. Construction of the monument started in 1961 under President Soekarno but was not completed until 1975, under President Soeharto. Taking pride of place in the heart of the city, this obelisk serves as a solemn tribute to the country's unfettered, long-standing journey towards independence. Dominating Jakarta's scintillating skyline, the national monument's design philosophy is deeply entrenched in ancient Indonesian ideologies, hence being rooted in its history, whilst also keeping up with the contemporary times. Inside the monument is the National History Museum, The Freedom Hall, which depicts Indonesia's struggle for independence through a series of dioramas, whereas the Hall of Contemplation displays the original Declaration of Independence document and a recording of the speech. An elevator takes one to the observation platform, which commands a bird's-eye view of the city.

Istiqlal Mosque

This extravagantly beautiful mosque sits on nine and a half hectares of land. Incredibly, President Soekarnoto chose a Christian architect to design it. Construction lasted from 1961 to 1967, but its official opening did not occur until 1978. One of the largest mosques in Southeast Asia, Mesjid Istiqlal can accommodate more than 10,000 people and 800 vehicles. It comprises five levels, and its walls, walkways and floors are almost entirely covered with marble from Tulungagung, East Java.

Plaza Senayan

Located at the heart of Jakarta's financial district and adjacent to Senayan Sports Complex, this elegant mall features Metro Department Store, Sogo Department Store, Armani and Versace. It also offers the seven-cinema Studio 21 Cineplex. The food court definitely merits a visit. Rest your legs after a frantic day of shopping and choose from various local and international vendors, including Mrs. Fields, Soto (for traditional chicken soup) and Gentong.

Kota Tua

Kota Tua, or Jakarta Old Town, is a historic neighborhood that once functioned as the headquarters of the Dutch East India Company. Some of the old buildings still stand here today, serving as a reminder of its past. Today, the neighborhood has become a popular spot where tourists flock to watch the European buildings, visit museums or dine at some of the fabulous restaurants and cafes. A few of the popular attractions here are the Fatahillah Square, Kota Intan Bridge, Museum Wayang, Jakarta History Museum, and Cafe Batavia.

Taman Mini Indonesia Indah

Situated on 120 hectares of land in the east of Jakarta, this unique complex offers visitors with limited time and the opportunity to see all of Indonesia's 27 provinces in an afternoon! The complex features life-sized replicas of traditional architecture from each province, a miniature version of the Indonesian archipelago, a series of museums and a number of well-maintained parks and gardens. The park's centerpiece is a beautiful artificial lake. The complex was the brainchild of Madam Tien Soeharto, the late Indonesian first lady.

Gereja Katedral (Cathedral Church)

Designed in a neo-gothic style, this cathedral was finally completed in 1901, after almost a decade of idle time due to financial difficulties. Beautifully decorated with holy pictures and figures, it is said to be the largest and most unique center of Catholicism in Jakarta. A small history museum on the second floor of the tower exhibits various artifacts and memorabilia related to the church. A small candle factory is located behind the grotto.

Taman Fatahillah (Fatahillah Park)

This beautifully conserved park played host to Batavia's administrative center in the 18th century. Found at the south end of the imposing city hall (now the Fatahillah Museum or the Jakarta History Museum) the town square served as the venue for various public events, from lively fairs to gory executions. In the center of the square now sits a small domed structure, constructed in 1972 by Governor Ali Sadikin as a replica of an old water fountain. The original once spouted contaminated water, thus contributing to the high mortality rate among the Dutch at that time. Admission is free.

Museum Bank Indonesia

Located inside a beautiful 18th-century Neo-Renaissance building in Jakarta, Museum Bank Indonesia served as the primary central bank from 1953 until its transformation into a museum in 2009. The museum has many documents, newspapers, photographs, and artifacts that showcase the banking and monetary history of the country since before colonial days. They also have currency notes and coins on display dating back to the 14th Century. Furthermore, visitors are treated to an extraordinary experience as the museum is exceptionally preserved with friendly and knowledgeable staff who are always ready to answer any questions.

Taman Suropati (Suropati Park)

Lying in the upscale Menteng residential area, this neat and lovely park is shaded by a number of giant trees. It inherited its name from Suropati, a Balinese rebel who rebelled and escaped from his Dutch master in 1684. A series of statues representing each of the original six members of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) sits against the backdrop of greenery. These statues symbolize friendship, peace, harmony and fraternity. Street artists sell their work along the side of the park.
