Built in 1905 and originally called the Chardron Bookshop, the Livraria Lello & Irmão is a rare example of Neo-Gothic architecture in the city of Porto. Now a gorgeous bookstore, this building was one of the reasons why Porto was designated a World Heritage Site. The wonderful staircase running through the middle of the shop is an important feature, as is the stained-glass skylight and the ornate wooden ceiling. Visitors stop by this prized landmark to browse through their massive collection of books and enjoy the amazing ambiance.
Founded in 1944, this bookshop is the leader of the market, especially in dictionaries, school manuals and educational software. As well as distributing their material throughout Portugal in all good bookshops and stationers, they also have two bookshops of their own in Oporto. They offer discounts to teachers in national schools.
The Almedina bookshop specializes in books on the legal system. Apart from selling every judicial book, by every publishing house, including the University of Coimbra, they also publish their own material. It is essentially frequented by lawyers and law students. The bookshop is small but completely filled to the brim with books, and the service is very personalized.
