P.J. Clarke's

Given that P.J. Clarke's has been around for over 120 years now, it is very apparent that this bar survived such minor irritations as Prohibition! For most of its lifetime, P.J.'s has served delicious sandwiches, burgers, and soups with mouth-watering steaks. The yummy menu features meals that pair well with the fine selection of whiskeys, wines, beers, and cocktails available here. The kitchen is open through the day, meaning you can come in and grab a bite to eat at this bar at nearly any hour.

915 3rd Avenue, At 55th Street, New York, NY, United States, 10022
Nom Wah Tea Parlor

Serving the people of New York since 1920, Nom Wah Tea Parlor is one of the longest-running dim-sum restaurants in the neighborhood. The interiors are simple with a brown chequered floor and yellow walls with pictures hanging on them. One must try their chef's special- Shanghainese soup dumplings, Minced beef dumplings in soup, Shrimp and snow pea leaf dumplings, Salt and pepper pork chops. Do not forget to try their teas, available in varieties of flavors like Jasmine, Long-jing (dragon well tea), Chrysanthemum, Shui Hisen, and more. To finish the meal on a happy note, their almond cookies, steamed red bean buns, and steamed lotus buns seem to do wonders for customers. So if you are looking for authentic Chinese cuisine with great dim sum head straight to Nom Wah Tea Parlor and you won't be disappointed.

13 Doyers Street, New York, NY, United States, 10013
Frankie & Johnnie's

The name of this restaurant has nothing to do with actual people named Frankie or Johnnie, in fact the words are old passwords between revelers and managers during Prohibition. 'Frankie' was used at the door, and if the reply was 'Johnnie', the drinking could start. This isn't the original Frankie & Johnnie's (that one is in Times Square), but it still serves USDA Prime Dry Age cuts that are just as delicious as the ones served at the flagship. This location in the Garment District provides classic sides as well like creamed spinach, potatoes and plenty of seafood. A full-bar and wine list are also available.

32 West 37th Street, Between 5th Avenue & Avenue Of The Americas, New York, NY, United States, 10018
Rao's Restaurant

Since 1896, the Rao family has served traditional Neapolitan dishes to diners in the area of East Harlem. Its tucked cozily on the corner of Pleasant Avenue and 114th St., pegged right against the East River and Jefferson Park, but even if you made the trip up here, it wouldn't be worth it because once you arrive your chances of getting a table are miniscule to none. That's because Rao's has the reputation of being one of the most difficult places to get a table in the entire city. In fact, there are only about 8 to 10 tables here and you practically have to know somebody like Bill Clinton, Billy Crystal, Woody Allen or Anthony Salerno to eat here. Nonetheless, the fam has another location in Las Vegas, where it's much easier to get in. They sell homemade sauces, oils and vinegar here to go along with your recipes, for which they have also uploaded a page full of recipes that can be prepared at home just by using the ingredients from the store. Some of their prominent dishes are broccoli rabe, lemon chicken and baked clams.

455 East 114th Street, New York, NY, United States, 10029
Le Veau D’or

Located in the well-heeled neighborhood of New York's Upper East Side, Le Veau D'or is an iconic French bistro and bar. Established in 1937, the place has earned its own loyal crowd of patrons over the years. The decor retains the vintage charm, which gives it an authentic brasserie ambiance. Recently, the responsibility of this brasserie was taken over by Frenchette, the 2019 winner of James Beard Award.

129 East 60th Street, New York, NY, United States, 10022
Minetta Tavern

Established in 1937, this tavern/restaurant was named after a brook that once flowed through Manhattan from the Collect Pond further north. Step inside, and you get immediately transported to post-depression New York, albeit with a more updated menu. Black and white tiles with dark, wood-paneled walls draw in the crowd. Today, Minetta Tavern is run by Keith McNally, the man behind Pastis and Balthazar. The dinner menu is highlighted by the cuts of beef, such as the dry-aged côte de boeuf served for two and the bone-in New York strip. The menu is seasonal and ever-changing, although you can always have traditional favorites like steak frites and burgers.

113 MacDougal Street, At the corner of Minetta lane, New York, NY, United States, 10012
Sardi's Restaurant

This landmark restaurant founded in 1921 has become a Broadway legend. Sardi's is known more for its theatrical clientele than for the cuisine, and the walls are aptly decorated with caricatures of famous stage and screen personalities. The menu has something for everyone. Specials include such items as Pan Seared Salmon Escalope, Beef Stew Provencal and California Mesclun Salad. Sardi's also offers late night suppers. The staff is friendly and attentive, even to those who are not famous. Call for dining hours.

234 West 44th Street, Between 8th Avenue & Shubert Alley, New York, NY, United States, 10036
Wollensky's Grill

In Manhattan, burger joints are a dime a dozen, from Shake Shack and J.G. Melon to Balthazar and Corner Bistro, some of the best in the entire country are located in the city. Many New Yorkers would also consider Wollensky's Grill as a member on the list. As part of the Smith & Wollensky's, the grill is the more casual version of the famous steakhouse where the burgers shine supreme.

201 East 49th Street, New York, NY, United States, 10022
Lombardi's

In 1897, Gennaro Lombardi started selling tomato pies to workers from a humble storefront on Spring Street. In 1905, he transformed it into what would become the first pizzeria in the United States. The original location closed in 1984, but the family reopened this pizzeria in 1994, right down the street. Inside, the magnificent, brick-oven pizza comes to your table the same way it did over a century ago. It's simple, crusty and much beloved by the locals and tourists. The pizzas use classic ingredients like San Marzano tomatoes and real Mozzarella di Bufala, and the menu also includes fresh salads, pastas, and desserts.

32 Spring Street, New York, NY, United States, 10012
Old Homestead Steakhouse

With a name like the Old Homestead, you are almost certain that this restaurant praises the bovine from top to bottom. The Old Homestead Steak House first opened in 1868 and it remains a straightforward, old-fashioned steakhouse without sacrificing any of the modern amenities. In this sense, thankfully, it is no longer that difficult to get Kobe beef from Japan, which probably wasn't on the menu when the restaurant was first established. Most of the dishes are priced in the higher range, but are well worth your money.
