Ruszwurm

Situated in the heart of the Castle District, this historic coffee house and patisserie has been open since 1827. It was founded by Franz Schwable and bought by Wilhelm Ruszwurm in 1884. It was nationalised under the Communists but is now run by Istvan Lukacs, ever since it was given back to its pre-war owner. The tiny coffee house comprises two small rooms, the first of which has a glass cabinet at one end from where you can select a pastry or cake. The walls are lined with more glass cabinets, all filled with such treasures. The second room has space for customers to sit on elegant light green chairs which evoke the splendor of the Austro-Hungarian Empire. All manner of coffees can be sampled and an interesting item on the wall is an ancient drinks list which shows what the beverages of preference were in the days of Maria Theresa. The cakes are delicious and the service is excellent.

Espresso Embassy

The Espresso Embassy is a haven for coffee lovers and a favorite amongst the city's connoisseurs. The decor is somehow hip, modern and rustic at the same time in a way that feels natural, comfortable and inviting. The at once soothing and exciting aroma of freshly brewed coffee will greet you at the door, and by the time you are seated you will know without a doubt that you are in for an unforgettable experience. A variety of coffee blends from around the world are transformed by the talented baristas into undeniably delicious cuppas that will keep you coming back for more. Be sure to try the tasting menu on your first visit before settling on a favorite. A few cakes and small bites are available as well. Topped with the kind of friendly service that is at times as hard to find as a good cup of coffee in Budapest, the Espresso Embassy offers an experience that rises above and beyond the average.

My Little Melbourne

As the name suggests, this little cafe was inspired by the coffee culture of Melbourne, and is a cozy place to get your caffeine fix. Despite its size, My Little Melbourne manages to serve some of the finest coffee in the city thanks to a keen eye for quality and the talented barista. To go along with your beverage, the cafe offers salads, cookies and other light bites. A couple of tables outside let you take in the buzz of the street while enjoying your coffee.

Central Café

First opened in 1887, the Central soon became the haunt of writers, poets and journalists. There are now even Internet facilities. A non-smoking balcony offers fresh air. The tables are square blocks of marble with rather severe wooden chairs. Try the 'Maria Thereza' coffee, a lethal blend of Cointreau, espresso and whipped cream. Or a flodni, a divine Jewish pastry with layers of apple, walnuts and poppy seeds. A variety of salads, seafood, chicken and pasta dishes are also available.

This contemporary cafe has everything you could want in your neighborhood coffee shop - cozy interiors, excellent brews, and an inviting, informal ambiance. Opt for seating at one of their communal-style wooden kitchen tables or head out to the patio on a summer afternoon and soak in the relaxed atmosphere and bright sunshine. The cafe serves only the best fair-trade coffee from small-scale producers; each cup is prepared with care and exceptional technique and an artistic touch. If you're feeling hungry, the cafe also offers a selection of fresh-baked croissants, sandwiches, salads and pastries every day.

With the talented barista Attila Molnar at its helm, Tamp & Pull has distinguished itself as the coffeehouse of choice for the city's connoisseurs. Every month at the Tamp & Pull brings with it a brand new selection of coffee blends and brews to choose from. While the menu does offer the standard espresso based drinks as well, true lovers of the bean are sure to appreciate these special creations. Every cup is freshly brewed and carefully crafted in a way that allows each blend's characteristic flavors to shine through, like the melodious notes that make up a symphony. Despite its reputation, the Tamp & Pull cafe at Czuczor utca boasts a casual, laid-back vibe that invites even the uninitiated to discover the delights of coffee.
