From the heart of the city, the bells of St David's Cathedral, a lovely Anglican Cathedral have been calling the faithful to worship for over 150 years. A small museum tells its history and the various chapels call for quiet contemplation. The Cathedral is also the home of the Choir of the Chapel of St Thomas, who lead even song.
Australia's oldest synagogue, Hobart Synagogue is a hidden gem worth visiting. Though a bit off the beaten track, visitors will appreciate both the history and architecture of this landmark structure. Constructed in the Egyptian Revival tradition, this synagogue dates as far back as 1845. Notice the unique window shape and columns synonymous with this style. A haven of calm in the city, the synagogue is still an active place of worship. Tours of the synagogue can be organized on request.
St Joseph's Catholic Church in the heart of town pre-dates St Mary's Cathedral. It has undergone considerable change and restoration in its 160 year history. Today, the parish it serves is small, but is enlarged each week by interstate and overseas visitors to whom a warm welcome is always extended. Visitors of all denominations are equally welcome.
St Mary's Cathedral is the seat of the Catholic Archdiocese of Hobart, which covers the state of Tasmania and the Bass Strait Islands. This Gothic revival architectural marvel shares the grounds with the girls' college of the same name. This mesmerizing building dates to the mid 19th century, and the visitors here are made to feel welcome by the congregation.
