Theater Lübeck

Art Nouveau architecture did not leave much of a mark on Lübeck, with one notable exception: the Stadt theater (municipal theatre), built in 1908 by Martin Dülfer. While the exterior is a no-frills example of German simplicity and practicality, the interior is an orgy of blue and gold, decorated with fairytale-like ornaments and chandeliers. The building houses three stages which put on pieces ranging from elaborately produced operas to simple one-man plays. The programme of events is published in the theater magazine SpielZeit and in the local press.

Willy Brandt House, Lübeck

Federal chancellor and Nobel laureate Willy Brandt, born in Lübeck in 1913, was doubtlessly one of the city's most distinguished sons. Opened in 2007, this museum in his native town commemorates the life of the statesman. An extensive permanent exhibition with numerous original objects is dedicated to the politician's career, his time as the West German head of government, his private life and his commitment to peace and human rights. Through the garden, where a segment of the Berlin Wall is on display, the museum is connected to the Günter-Grass-Haus. The building itself is a remarkable 18th-century town house, once the seat of the municipal archive and highly impressive in its own right.

Günter Grass Museum (Günter-Grass-Haus)

Günter Grass, eminent author and Nobel laureate most famous for his 1959 novel The Tin Drum, was born in Danzig but has been a resident of Lübeck for many years now. Consequently, the city established a museum in his honor in 2002. The permanent exhibition is dedicated to Grass' oeuvre as a litterateur, painter and sculptor. In temporary exhibitions, the works of other multi-talented artists are spotlighted; special events such as lectures and movie screenings are held frequently. Through a sculpture garden, the museum is connected to the Willy-Brand-Haus. The building itself, thoroughly renovated, is an early 19th-century neo-classical town house and well worth seeing in itself. -Oliver Henkel
