St. Jakobi

With its brick Gothic architecture and high steeple, St. Jakobi fits in perfectly with the other major churches in Lübeck. This steeple, however, also makes the church somewhat different: four large copper balls and a baroque bulge at the base give it a unique appearance. Presumably, St. Jakobi arose about 1276 from the reconstruction of an older Roman basilica. St. Jakobi remained undamaged during World War II, so the complete interior from six centuries ago gives an impression of Lübeck's churches in the olden days. The bronze font (1466) and the late Gothic Brömbse Altar (1502) are particularly spectacular. The two organs from 1466 and 1504 are very special treasures, and are still played today in concerts and during service. Check website.

St. Mary's Church

One of the city’s oldest church, the St. Mary’s Church is a gateway to Lubeck’s cultural history. An exemplary model of North German brick gothic architecture, the church is a symbol of the city’s prosperity. During World War II, the church suffered grave damages; however, the city restored the structure in a way that retained the grandeur of the church, whilst exhibiting the war wounds. The broken remains of the historic bells are an example of the mindful restoration. In addition to the notable architecture and fascinating history, the church houses several cultural highlights, such as the astronomical clock, the historic carillon and the Fredenhagen altarpiece. The Danse Macabre stained glass of the church is possibly its most popular feature. The vivid windows of the Danse Macabre Chapel boast of colorful artwork, depicting morbid figures of those dead and alive. Visit the St. Mary’s Church for an unforgettable immersive experience.

St. Petri zu Lübeck

St. Petrikirche’s history can be traced back to 1170, although it’s exact year of construction remains unknown. The church suffered significant damage during the Second World War and was only restored in 1987. One of the church’s notable features is the monumental tower looming over the city’s skyline.

St. Aegidien

St. Aegidien is something else. Compared to its four sisters, the other Old Town churches, it is of modest size. If it were not for the relatively high steeple, one could easily imagine it to be a village church of some importance. Such modesty is the result of the quarter's social background. This part of town was the quarter of small craftsmen and city peasants, who could not afford a big, representative building. We do not even know exactly when the construction began, but in 1227 the church already existed. The core is a Roman basilica with three - unusually narrow - naves. But only a few Roman elements have remained and St. Aegidien as we see it today is largely the result of Gothic reconstructions during the 14th and 15th century. While the exterior is rather plain, the interior seems to be rich since the church remained undamaged in World War II, and thus still gives an impression of what Lübeck churches once were like. Particularly worth seeing are the remarkable renaissance singers' balcony (1587), the Baroque altar (1701) and the big organ from 1626, the only surviving example of the Hamburg type. It is often played in concerts, which are announced in the local press and on St. Aegidien's display board.

Lübeck Cathedral

Construction work of Lübeck Cathedral began in 1173 and despite later architectural changes, the cathedral still resembles a monumental religious fortress. Gothic elements like the steeple roofs, the chancel and western wing were added in the 13th and 14th centuries. The Reformation in the 16th century did not change the status of the cathedral, except that the bishop was Protestant rather than Catholic. Like much of the Old Town, the cathedral was heavily damaged in a 1942 air-raid, but several priceless treasures survived including the 17-meter (55.77-feet) high Christus Triumphator from 1477 and the Gothic balcony and clock from 1628.
