It has been around for ages, but this mall seems to be going through a hibernation period. (As any retailer will tell you, this is normal for a Maui mall.) Currently it is home to a few restaurants, notably Coconut's Bakery & Cafe and Thailand Cuisine. Longtime clients Waldenbooks and the Kukui Theaters remain, while the opening of a new bank may signal the beginning of a commercial spurt for this sleepy little mall. If not, well, it is still the only place in South Kihei to catch a movie. Note: Credit card acceptance policy varies by merchant.
Since its opening, this 32 million dollar complex has hosted thousands of concerts, lectures, plays and other events. It is the largest arts complex in all of Hawaii. The center is comprised of a grassy amphitheater, the majestic Castle Theater, the McCoy Theater, an art gallery, studios and classrooms. All Maui's major entertainment events and concerts are held here. Cutting-edge plays are performed in the intimate McCoy Theater, while big name groups such as Santana play in the outdoor amphitheater regularly. Check the website or call for a schedule of upcoming events.
Operas, big-budget musicals and major lectures take place at this elegant 1200-seat theater. With comfortable royal blue seats, a balcony, an enormous stage and an orchestra pit, this is really the only venue on Maui that can accommodate a sophisticated arts crowd. The theater has state-of-the-art lighting and sound equipment, as well as a spacious reception area. The theater has hosted everything from hula performances to productions of Handel's Messiah. This is a stunning facility that lends credibility to Maui's performing arts scene.
Located on the Cameron Way in Kahului, McCoy Studio Theater is the flexible theater of Maui Arts & Cultural Center. This theater has a maximum seating capacity for 300 spectators, however, the stage and the seating arrangement can easily be adjusted to suit the requirements of the events. Events like dramas, dance, concerts, comedy shows, opera and film screenings are held here throughout the year. Some of the best musicians like George Kahumoku, Jr. and Ledward Ka‘apana have performed on its stage, making it a major venue on the island to watch live music. This beloved landmark in the center of Wailuku Town is much improved after a 1995 facelift. In its 70-year history, the theater has won the hearts and support of island residents, many of whom participate in the low-budget productions. This is the home of the Maui Community Theater, a popular amateur theater company that puts on three to four plays and musicals each year. Under the directorship of local actor Doug McBride, the company has presented such favorites as Odd Couple and Blite Spirit, as well as locally written productions.
