The Museum of Contemporary Art's sole mission is to encourage contemporary art and provide a platform for artists to showcase their talents. It's located in the Cultural Center of Detroit, an impressive 22,000-square-foot(2043.87 square meter) space. Not only for art exhibitions, the space is also open for lectures, events and screenings. It also features a store where you can buy exclusive MOCAD T-shirts. A USD5 donation is suggested for admission.
Located on the Wayne State University, this is one of the best galleries in Detroit. Stroll through both levels of this gallery and you'll find contemporary art in every corner. The work often takes unique views and are supposed to be thought-provoking and challenging the boundary of the current art scenario. The gallery always has both local artwork and international talent on display.
View 60,000 amazing works of art at the Detroit Institute of the Arts. 100 galleries are filled with sculptures, paintings, and other artworks. The Thinker, the famous sculpture by Auguste Rodin is placed near the entrance. Permanent collections in the museum include Islamic, Flemish, pre-Columbian, European, African, Asian, and American art. Cultural events are held throughout the year at the auditorium and recital hall.
For a unique art experience, check out The Heidelberg Project (HP). Started as a way to introduce art to a rundown, underprivileged neighborhood, it is now a growing movement to beautify and add art to local low-income communities. On Heidelberg Street you will find a stretch of painted houses and yards that each take on a different artistic theme. A lot of the homes recycle trash and turn it into art installations. The best way to experience The Heidelberg Project is to park and simply walk the street yourself.
Housed in one massive four story building, this art complex strives to bring together local artists and their work under one roof. Featuring 31 different galleries, studios and offices throughout the four flours, 4731 Gallery showcases a variety of mediums. Everything from sculpture, photography, pottery, mixed media, fashion and interior designers to wedding planners and music promotional companies can be found here. Russell Industrial Center is a unique center that includes several building and is known as one of the top artistic venues in the Midwest. The outside still looks like an old manufacturing factory, but inside you'll discover over 100 artists' workshops. Russell Industrial Center also hosts top events including art shows and exhibitions.
One of the area's most prestigious avant-garde art museums, Cranbrook Art Museum features acclaimed contemporary painters, sculptors, promising new artists who display challenging and cutting-edge exhibitions. The museum's permanent collection highlights the accomplishments of decades of Cranbrook graduates from many different mediums. This is a popular gathering spot for local artists and art critics and is the center of a vibrant artistic community.
