Girgaum Chowpatty

A city built on islands, Mumbai has no shortage of beaches. The most popular among them is Girgaum Chowpatty, a stretch of beach that extends along Marine Drive near Charni Road Railway Station. The only sand beach area in South Mumbai offers a unique culinary experience for both the tourists as well as the locals. A stretch of the Chowpatty beach is teeming with a long line of fast food stalls serving excellent Pav Bhaji (spicy mashed potatoes and bread), Vada Pav (potato cutlets in bread), Bhutta (roasted corn on the cob) and kulfi (regional ice-cream). However, Girgaum Chowpatty truly comes to life at sunset with its masseurs, balloon-sellers, gamblers, fortune-tellers, magicians, ferris wheels and shooting galleries.

Juhu Beach

Juhu beach is hardly the place to take a dip in the ocean and sunbathe, what with all the vendors crowding the place with their stalls. Especially on weekends, a carnival type atmosphere prevails with horse rides, dancing monkeys, food vendors and street entertainers. Make sure to taste the famous Pav Bhaji, which is a spicy curry of mixed vegetables and potatoes served with buttered bread and observe the thousands of Indian families making the most of the evening. The beach is lined up with luxury hotels and expensive apartments.

Kala Ghoda

Kala Ghoda is the art and culture hub of the swanky South Mumbai region. Kala Ghoda, which translates to "Black Horse," gets its name from a sculpture of King Edward VII made of black stone which is now placed in Byculla zoo. A home to several beautiful ancient structures Knesset Eliyahoo, K. R. Oriental Institute, Elphistone College, Esplanade Mansion and is a pure visual treat for architecture enthusiasts. Besides, it is home to the famous annual Kala Ghoda Art Festival and art galleries like the Jehangir Art Gallery and National Gallery of Modern Art, making it a must-visit area for the art enthusiasts. For the history enthusiasts, Kala Ghoda houses Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Vastu Sanghralaya which houses more than 50000 exhibits depicting Indian history. Gateway of India

Mumbai's most popular landmark, this yellow basalt arch, was built to commemorate the visit of King George V and Queen Mary in 1911. Designed by George Wittet, this imposing structure overlooking the Arabian Sea was opened to the public in 1924, and since then it's been on every tourist itinerary, besides being a favorite meeting point for the locals. Many launches depart from here for short joyrides around the harbour, or for longer ones to the Elephanta Caves. Touts, balloon sellers, photographers, and peanut vendors rove across the place amid tourists who gape in pure delight and awe at its sheer scale and architecture. Awash in elegant semblances of Indo-Saracenic and Islamic architectural styles, the Gateway is also within close proximity to the Taj Mahal Palace Hotel, which is another one of the city's most prized possessions. Accentuated by the rippling waters of the sea, this monumental, triumphal arch stands under a gleaming dome and is adorned with fine detailing, including latticework and an inscription that describes why the arch was constructed. What was once a modest piece of land utilized by the city's fisherfolk was later frequented by British nobles along with other luminaries, and today it stands as a gargantuan, emblematic jewel of Mumbai.

Colaba Causeway

South to the Gateway of India is Colaba Causeway, the commercial thoroughfare that is extremely popular with the tourists and locals. Glorified in all guide books, from Lonely Planet to Gregory Roberts' Shantaram, Colaba Causeway passes close to Sassoon Dock, which is the picture of hectic activity every morning as the fisherwomen unload and sort the catch that would be sold throughout Mumbai. The Causeway has some great restaurants from Delhi Darbar, Piccadilly, Cafe Churchill, Basilico, and the veritable institutions Cafe Mondegar (Mondy's) and Cafe Leopold (Leo's) are both found only a few yards away from each other. There are shops and vendors selling anything and everything under the sun. This is the place to come if you want to taste the flavor of the city that never sleeps.

Dhobi Ghat

Dhobi Ghat is where chaos, color, activity and sounds mix together in a freakish blend. An anti-thesis to the sophisticated and manicured lawns of Mahalaxmi Racecourse only a few hundred yards away, Dhobi Ghat is the fascinating place where Mumbai's laundry gets done. Clothes are hand washed by hundreds of Dhobis (laundry men and women) on concrete sinks and hung on clotheslines. Beware of the lurking touts, who'll insist there's a 'government levied entry fee' for visitors (foreigners). Secure a vantage point on Mahalaxmi Bridge instead. With the busy local trains passing by, and colorful laundry being dried in the sparkling sun, photographic opportunities are numerous. Call the tourist information centre for further details.
