Palma Cathedral (La Seu)

A glorious ode to the French Gothic style, Palma Cathedral seems to ascend from the ocean with its flying buttresses and golden-hued sandstone walls perched on a cliff overlooking the ocean. The cathedral's high ceilings and gorgeous rose windows inlaid with stunning stained glass adds a sense of light and space to the interiors as the sunlight streams in bathing the columned aisles with a warm, multi-hued glow. Master architect Anton Gaudi left his mark on the cathedral in the form of a fascinating Crown of Thorns that's suspended over the altar, wrought from cork and cardboard. Among the cathedral's many gems, the Portal del Mirador, an ornate door designed by Guillem Sagrera depicting scenes from the Last Supper is worth a look.

Santuari de Lluc

Santuari de Lluc is regarded as a sacred site and a center of pilgrimage since the 13th century. It was here that a newly converted Christian Arab shepherd boy, discovered a dark wooden statue of the Virgin in a rock cleft. La Moreneta or the Little Dark One as the statue is called is now encrusted with precious stones, and is placed in a chapel decorated with the coat of arms of every Mallorcan town. Pilgrims and tourists alike pay homage. The monastery complex includes Els Porxerets, the former pilgrims' quarters with stables, and the the Way of the Rosary. There is also a historical and archaeological museum with a collection of ceramics, chalices, coins, paintings by Josep Coll Bardolet with the santuari.
