Originally constructed by King Eric of Pomerania in the 15th Century, Malmö Castle, as it stands today, dates back to the 16th Century and is an icon of southern Sweden. Built by the Danes, it has served as a military fortress, a prison, an armory and now houses two museums - the Konstmuseum and the Stadsmuseum -, both administered by the city. While the former is the city's primary art museum, the latter is a repository of artifacts and information that pertain to the city's rich history. Both museums attract countless visitors, but the castle itself is a unique piece of local heritage that also provides beautiful views of the city and the waters of the Öresund. Historically, the castle is significant as the prison that held James Hepburn, 4th Earl of Bothwell, the third husband of Mary, Queen of Scots, for a period of five years between 1568 and 1573. A grand and imposing structure to this day, the red-hued facade of Malmö Castle continues to inspire much awe.

Stortorget is the original core of the old city. Once the market square for the medieval population, it's now one of the most upscale addresses in the city and houses shops, restaurants and is very close to several of the city's signature landmarks. Visitors staying on or near Stortorget are guaranteed a front row seat to the civic life and attractions of Malmö.

One of the finest examples of empire state architecture in the country, Katrinetorp is a historic estate worth the trip. A popular destination among history lovers, this 19th-century manor and its English gardens is nestled on Malmo's outskirts. Though it underwent a renovation, all its historical evidences have been kept intact, including its period decor. This former country estate is now administered by the City of Malmo. Guided tours are provided if requested. These tours will take you through the history of this estate, its rooms and gardens. The converted barn restaurant is a garden cafe of repute. It is in the east wing of the property. Check out the gift shop on the west wing which sells Swedish linen, ceramics, candles and more.

Lunds Universitet, or the University of Lund, is one of Scandinavia's oldest and most prestigious universities. When you encounter a person in Sweden who is successful in politics, art, business or intellectual achievement, chances are decent that they studied here. It is a synonym for all the things that university life entails: intellectualism, liberalism, research, political discourse, and not least, partying as well. The university itself is huge- too spread out and massive to be visible at a single sight, it is far larger than the couple of plazas and building developments that are most obviously visible near the center of Lund, and even has affiliated faculties and branches in other cities throughout the region and the nation. The university also houses several museums, and these are likely to be of most interest to visitors not considering attending school here.
