Goa

A former Portuguese colony, this tiny state has captured the imagination of foreign travelers since the 1960's and has ever since become a land of the laid-back vibe. Portuguese colonial influences still manifest themselves through quaint white churches, old-style villas, culinary influences, and the much-awaited February Carnival which sees colorful floats, street parties, tourists and villagers, coming out in full force onto the streets. Goa is perhaps India's finest example of East Meets West, where traditional elements effortlessly fuse with Western influences in perfect harmony and beauty.

Mandovi River

One of the main rivers in Goa, the Mandovi River is all of only 70 kilometers but is still the lifeline of this beautiful state. The river stems from the Dudhsagar waterfalls and rips through the center of the city in all its splendor. The banks of the river offer panoramic views of Panaji and the beautiful Islands of Divar and Chorao in the distance. The Mandovi Bridge which is built across the river for smooth transportation between the North and South is also another attraction along the banks. During the tourist season, a number of cruises leave from here for short tours where guests are treated to an assortment of Goan and Portuguese folk music and dance.

Colva Beach

A short drive to the south of Margao along the main beach road welcomes you to the 'Pride of Salcete', Colva Beach. The beach with its picturesque location is a visual treat of virgin natural beauty; also the only beach in Goa with a white sandy shore. Tourist cottages lined along the beach stretch provide accommodation options at cheaper rates. The Beach is famous for its free community celebrations that feature local gatherings, water-sport meets, and musical nights. So get your swimming trunks on and head to the cool waters or dance the night away on the white sands.

Dona Paula Beach

Located just off the Dona Paula Promenade, the Dona Paula Beach lies along the scenic coastline of Goa. The beach is where the Mandovi River meets the Arabian Sea. With one side covered in rocks and the other covered in grainy golden sand, this beach has boats and speed boats all around its shores, and sparkling crystal clear waters. Boating rides which are fun for the kids and the entire family are held here during the holiday season between November to March. Miramar Beach

Connected to the Arabian Sea and located very close to the capital city of Panaji, the Miramar Beach is not as well known as its touristy counterparts, the Calangute Beach and Baga Beach. It could be a good thing however, as this beach is blessed with clear blue waters and golden sand, all of it still untouched by the harsh effects tourism sometimes brings. Here one can find locals and a handful of tourists who come here to relax by the wonderful seating area or for a leisurely evening stroll. During the early hours of morning, fishermen head down to sea with their boats for the catch of the day. During the winter period, one can also behold a spectacular sight of migratory birds like gulls soaring into the sky in organized formations.

Benaulim Beach

One of South Goa's premium beaches, the Benaulim Beach has still gone unnoticed at least by domestic tourists who tend to flock to North Goa's Calangute Beach. Much quieter than most other beaches, Benaulim is well known for its fishing activity, gleaming white sands, deep blue waters, and picturesque surroundings. When night falls, this beach is transformed into a sort of fairyland with many of the sea-facing eateries lighting up in anticipation of tourists looking for some nocturnal entertainment, local cuisines, and well-crafted drinks. During the peak season, one can indulge in boat rides, water sports, and paragliding.

Varca Beach

Although there are many famous beaches in Goa, most of them are crowded and thronged by tons of travelers. However, one hidden gem in the city is the Varca Beach. Relatively untouched by the crazy Goa crowd, this beach has fantastic fine golden sand with turquoise blue waters that makes it a pristine destination to visit. There are rows of colorful boats, which belong to local anglers and you can even take pictures with it.

Candolim Beach

Set along the majestic coastline of North Goa, the Candolim Beach offers much respite to those looking for a break from the touristy aggression of the more popular Calangute Beach. Like other beaches, this one too offers much tranquil, sea facing shacks and water sports like parasailing. However what sets it apart from the others is its coastline which is dominated by the colossal outline of the River Princess ship which ran around here in 2001 during a cyclonic storm. Although environmental hazards exist because of the ships continued presence, one cannot deny that this beach is easily one of the most photographed and it never fails to evoke fascination and awe in every visitor.

Calangute Beach

Set against the backdrop of the deep blue Arabian Sea, Calangute Beach is an evergreen favorite with tourists and locals alike. Nicknamed the 'Queen Of The Beaches', this beach was once a haven for the flower children of the 1960's. However, as time passed, an aggressive brand of tourism took over, and today it has been invaded by throngs of local tourists who come here for a dip in the sea, to play football, stroll along the sands or to enjoy the warm home-cooked meals at the many restaurants along the shores of Calangute. A number of accommodations varying from very expensive to moderate lie in and around the area. Attractions like the St. Alex Church are located very close to the beach.

Baga Beach

Continuing along the same stretch as the Calangute Beach, Baga Beach is renowned for its pulsating nightlife and beach shacks. Surrounded by palm trees and rocky cliffs, the beach is well known for its diligent fishermen who come here at dawn to cast their nets into the ocean. Besides this quaint attraction, Baga also has diverse options for dining and nightlife with many restaurants, pubs, and clubs located very close to the shore. Because of its popularity, Baga Beach has a wide range of accommodation choices. During the tourist season, water sports like speed boating, banana boating, and para-sailing are the order of the day.

Anjuna Beach

Surrounded by palm trees and red rugged cliffs, the Anjuna beach is one of the most picturesque beaches in north Goa. A hub for foreign tourists since the 1960's, this beach comes alive during the tourist season which begins in November. The very famous Chapora Fort can be spotted from these golden shores, much to the delight of the history buffs. Even on the international party circuit, Anjuna is synonymous with trance and rave, and during the season you have the chance of a lifetime to attend one of the full moon Acid Parties that progress all night long. Besides history and hedonism, one can also feel the sense of adventure in the form of beach & water sports that take place here. There are many resorts, bungalows and restaurants located close by to the beach; so pack your bags and head down to a paradise called Anjuna.
