Nestled on the banks of Lake Geneva, Montreux thrives under the watchful eyes of the Alps. Dotted with a series of archaic churches and a venue to several music festivals, this municipalty is as much a cultural treat as it is a scenic wonder.

Chillon Castle

The Château de Chillon (Chillon Castle) is the most visited historical building in the country. Located 20 minutes away by train (just outside Montreux), this fortress dates back to the 11th century and is worth a visit. Try to avoid the massive number of tourists who flock here during the summer months by arriving early. And if you are able to, take the train to Montreux and walk along the lake to the castle. One piece of advice, a tourist stall screens a video of the castle right outside the entrance. Try not to be one of those people who become glued to the screen when the real thing is towering above your head!

Freddie Mercury Statue

Erected in honour of one of rock and roll's most iconic frontmen, the legendary Freddy Mercury's gleaming bronze statue strikes his unforgettable triumphal pose along Les Planches' charming eastern waterfront. Freddy's association with Switzerland started when he became transfixed by the quaint alpine town of Montreux after recording an album there in 1978 with his band Queen. Affirming his love for the calm and quiet of his surroundings, the rocker also purchased a stately mansion that overlooked the tranquil waters of Lake Geneva. The city administration decided to repay his faith towards his adopted home after his demise by building him a 3-meter ( 9.8-feet) memorial statue in his memory that still shines as brightly today as it did in 1996.

Lake Geneva

The pride of Central Europe, and the largest water body in Switzerland, this crescent-shaped lake is lined with star-studded attractions around its shimmering shoreline that straddles both France and Switzerland. The mesmerizing combination of lake and alpine scenery is more pronounced toward the eastern tip of the lake, between the communes of Vevey and Villeneuve. On the far northern shore, the sides of the mountain are delicately laced with a grove of trees, at the foothills of which idyllic towns and quaint villages lie nestled. Blessed with spectacular views of terraced vineyards that stripe the hills between Lausanne and Vevey, Lake Geneva also attracts a set of enthusiastic oenophiles every year. Under stark blue skies, Lake Geneva is at its resplendent best in the summertime, when Belle Epoque boats lazily ply the lake's shores, and annual regattas like Tour du Lac and yacht racing festivals take advantage of its scenic backdrop.
