Butte is a city in southwestern Montana, United States, located in Silver Bow County. In the 19th century, it was one of the largest copper mining boomtowns in the American West, and home to several large mining companies.


Historic Clark Chateau Museum & Gallery

Housed inside a mansion of the same name, the Charles W. Clark Chateau is a museum and arts center operated by the Butte Silver Bow Arts Foundation. Established in 1977, the museum focuses on the history of ethnicity and culture of Butte. The arts center displays exhibit from various artists on a six-week cycle. It also has an annual youth art exhibit that showcases art from public schools in Butte. It has a host of events lined up every year. Do check the website for further details.

Our Lady of the Rockies

Perched up at 8500 feet (2591 meters) above sea level stands a 90 foot (27meters) tall statue of a woman with welcoming arms. Built to resemble Mother Mary, Our Lady of the Rockies is the fourth-tallest figure in the country. The statue is symbolic of all women, especially those who are mothers. To visit the statue, one can take a bus from The Our Lady of the Rockie's gift shop in Butte.

Mineral Museum

Located in the historic mining city of Butte, Mineral Museum in Montana Tech campus is a must-visit attraction. It is one of the most amazing attractions that boast remarkable collections and exhibits. The museum features the finest minerals and rocks one can find from the earth and outer space. Founded in the early 1900s, the museum started with 200 specimens. Today, the museum houses incredible displays ranging from around 1300 mineral products to fluorescent minerals, engaging displays retelling stories of the local mining history. The museum's highlight is the 27.5-ounce nugget in gold. Admission is free, but donations are appreciated.

The World Museum of Mining

Founded in 1963, the World Museum of Mining takes a peek into the history and culture of mining here in Butte. Located in the actual mine yard of the town called the Orphan Girl Mine, the museum offers a very intriguing experience for the tourists. Visitors can tour and admire the museum exhibits, retelling the stories of the mine and the miners; their importance to the city's growth and economy. Mai Wah Society Museum

Founded in 1991, the Mai Wah Museum is a history museum that aims to preserve the rich heritage of Asians who migrated to the Rocky mountains. Berkeley Pit

Situated in the city of Butte, the Berkeley Pit was a large open mine with deposits of copper. It covers about one mile (1.6-kilometers) and is 1780 feet (540 meters) deep. Today, the Berkeley pit is a major tourist attraction. Visitors can get a brilliant view of the glorious pit now filled with toxic water from the overlook platform. You can also get a gift from a small shop selling gifts in the vicinity.

Copper King Mansion

Built in 1884, as the house of William Andrews Clark, the Copper King Mansion (W. A. Clark Mansion) is an architectural masterpiece. Listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1970, the Victorian Mansion is a must-visit attraction in the town that catches the attention almost instantly. At present, the mansion functions as a bed and breakfast. It is also open to the public and provides guided tours where visitors are often dazzled by the fresco-painted ceilings, stained glass window, and carved fireplace.

The Granite Mountain Speculator Mine Memorial

When in the historic mining town of Butte, one cannot miss the Granite Mountain Speculator Mine Memorial. This memorial park is an impressive monument commemorating the tragic disaster that took place in the mines on June 8, 1917. The open-air plaza can be visited by the public, where there can read notes written by the miners and listen to the audio guide retelling the history. The site also offers fantastic vistas.
