Le Troquet De Henry

Le Troquet De Henry is a lively local dive bar. Graffiti sprayed walls, colorful murals, comfy couches and dim lighting welcome you into this local hang-out spot. On a weekend you'll probably find youngsters playing a game of foosball, hanging out and chatting and mingling with their drinks out on the street in front of the bar. Small and often crowded, with a distinctly Bohemian vibe, you can grab a pint of chilled beer and some quick snacks. The bar also serves a decent selection of food, and the pizzas are quite popular.

Café San Bernardo

Café San Bernardo is a world of its own, welcoming youths and the older crowd with its hipster setting, in the heart of Villa Crespo. Dating back to the year 1957, it is housed inside a period structure on Avenida Corrientos. A run-down gymnasium, bar and a cafe rolled into one, San Bernardo is frequented by the elderly drinkers during the day, while the young call it their favorite night haunt. Pool tables, ping pong and other board games keep guzzlers busy, even as the friendly waiters are happy to serve large portions of delicious papas fritas and other local delights.

Post Street Bar

Probably the most visually stimulating bar in Buenos Aires, the walls of Post Bar are covered head to toe in stencils and graffiti, with more than 1836 drawings made by local, well-known street artists. This casual dive bar located in the middle of trendy Palermo Soho is a perfect spot to grab a beer or a cheap drink, while sitting for hours admiring the art-filled walls. Go with a large group and order a picada (platter of meats and cheeses) while playing rounds of darts, and you are bound for a fun night. Thursday nights are always popular as free pizza is provided.

Carnal

This hip bar in Palermo draws a young, funky crowd in search of a cool cocktail on the weekend or a happy-hour scene during the week. Although the lower level is a bit dark and cluttered, with somewhat of a college-bar feel, head to the upstairs terrace for a breath of fresh air. The deck here is impressive, decorated with sultry blue lighting and chic white couches. Pick a table under a white-cloth canopy and try some of their international food—or at least their flawless Mojito. Carnal plays reggae music on Fridays, making this an increasingly popular choice for a summer night in Buenos Aires.

La Puerta Roja

La Puerta Roja is one of the more straightforward drinking establishments in Buenos Aires; no cover fee, no lines at the door, no confusing lists that your name is inevitably not on. As long as you can find it (the 'puerta roja', or red door, is the only street-side distinguishing characteristic), this San Telmo spot could easily become your favorite, friendly neighborhood joint, what with the no-frills classic, well drinks and a variety of local and imported beers at fair prices, the pool hall feel, the international crowd, and, in case of a need for a breather, the airy balconies over the street below.

733 Chacabuco, Buenos Aires, Argentina, C1405
Bar Británico

Despite the evolution in the neighborhood from the former stomping ground of Argentine elite to the urban playground of students and travelers, you will always find a taste of the classic barrio at the famous Bar Britanico. Writers, lovers, politicians and locals frequent this Buenos Aires landmark to enjoy its simple menu, the sights of Parque Lezama looming across the street, and the (somewhat) gentle sounds of cars bumbling over the cobblestoned Defensa street. Avoid stopping in on a Sunday when Defensa is overtaken by the antique fair; your coffee will taste better on a less hectic morning or afternoon.

399 Brasil, (cross-street Defensa), Buenos Aires, Argentina, C1154
