Groeninge Museum is the city's fine arts museum, well-known for its collection of 'Flemish Primitives', the name derives from the original school of Flemish painters such as Van Eyck, Memling, Gerard David and others. The building itself is an incarnation, dating from the mid-1930s and the collection is not limited to the Primitives, as there are also exhibits dedicated to the works of Baroque and Renaissance painters, in addition to smaller collections of contemporary artists, most notably the Herbert Collection.
A unique museum by the fact that it is housed in a hospital, the Memlingmuseum is actually both a museum that depicts the history of the hospital itself alongside exhibiting the works from the 'Flemish Primitive' Hans Memling. Visitors can also see the apothecary shop and the shrine to Ursula while here, as well as the sickrooms, which are reminders of how the infirm and unable were given hospice and care.
