George Square

Flanked on one side by the magnificent City Chambers and on another by the Greater Glasgow and Clyde Valley Tourist Board, George Square was laid out in the 19th Century and is dominated by a 24-meter (80-foot) column, with a statue of Sir Walter Scott on top. On a sunny day, clusters of people sunbathe amidst statues of such august personages as Queen Victoria, Prince Albert, Robert Burns, James Oswald, James Watt, William Gladstone and Robert Peel. The Cenotaph war memorial is also around and the square itself saw bloodshed in 1918 when crowds rioted during a protest against the 56-hour working week. As the only large open space in the city center, it's often used as a venue for celebrations.

Glasgow Cathedral

Glasgow's patron saint, St Mungo, founded this cathedral on the site of a Christian burial ground. One of Scotland's oldest medieval churches, Glasgow Cathedral is a stunning embodiment of Scottish Gothic architecture. Built on the ground where St Kentigern is said to have been buried, the cathedral is also said to have functioned as a genesis of Glasgow. Glasgow cathedral has an arsenal of stunning features to boast, including sharp spires, archways, elongated windows fashioned out of stained glass, and a brilliantly-patterned ceiling. Dating back to the 13th century, the cathedral has valiantly braved myriad ravages and stands today as one of Scotland's most revered cathedrals and a stirring piece of architectural greatness. A prized landmark of the city, the cathedral has also birthed Glasgow University within its depths.

Queen's Cross Church

The Queen's Cross Church, also known as The Mackintosh Church, stands impressively at the intersection of busy Maryhill and Garscube Roads. Designed by renowned Scottish architect, Charles Rennie Mackintosh, it is unique for not only being spire-less but also for being the the only church planned and completed by the artist. From decorative motifs that lean on spirituality and mysticism to the stunning blue-heart stained glass window and the stark black timber beams against white walls, Mackintosh's unmistakable style is evident in every detail of this building. The majestic edifice is no longer a church and is now home of the Charles Rennie Mackintosh Society.

Hunterian Museum and Art Gallery

Opened in 1807 with funds and artifacts bequeathed to the Glasgow University by William Hunter, this was the first public museum in Scotland. It was originally sited on High Street but in 1870 the university moved to Gilmorehill and the Hunterian moved too. Since 1980, the art collection has been housed in a separate, purpose-built gallery across the road. The permanent collection in the museum includes exhibitions on the Romans in Scotland, the ancient Egyptians, Captain Cook, dinosaurs and fossils, human evolution and a vast collection of coins and medals. The gallery is probably most noted for the collection of works by Whistler but there's also a good array of 19th and 20th Century Scottish art, works by Rembrandt and Chardin as well as Scotland's largest print collection. A gift shop can be found on the museum premises. Some parts of the museum may have an entrance fee.

People's Palace

Opened in 1898 by the Earl of Rosebery, this handsome edifice has been standing in Glasgow Green as a strong cultural symbol. The former cultural center for the East Enders, People's Palace showcases the story of Glasgow and Glaswegians from the 17th Century through the 20th Century. Pictorials, audio-visuals, artifacts and stories bring life to the chronicles of Glasgow's people and its storied history. Comedian Billy Connolly's Banana Boots are among the most famous displays at this repository. The museum's premises brim with their own charm, featuring elements like the impressive ceramic fountain, the Doulton Fountain, which is set in the front of this building. The adjacent Victorian glasshouse, also known as the Winter Gardens, attracts as much attention.

Kelvingrove Art Gallery and Museum

In 1901, the splendid Kelvingrove Gallery was built to house the International Exhibition. In 2007 a major remodel was completed, making Kelvingrove even more of a must-see Glasgow attraction than it was before. This red sandstone building on Glasgow's Argyle Street immediately captures attention, as do the 22 themed galleries and remarkably curated 8000-odd objects inside it. According to a local legend, the gallery was built back to front by mistake, but this is just a myth - it was intended to face the river rather than the road. The collection within ranges from local historical art to Rodin sculptures, natural history specimens of varying interest, and a Stormtrooper costume from the original Star Wars films. There is also an emphasis on the King of Surrealism, Salvador Dali's 'Christ of St John of the Cross'. Exciting exhibitions, a special emphasis on involving youngsters and a timeless devotion to art deems the Kelvingrove Gallery one of the most noteworthy artistic repositories in Scotland.

Loch Lomond & The Trossachs National Park

Gleaming freshwater lakes, idyllic glens and sinuous stretches of hills girdle the span between Scotland's Lowlands and Highlands. The result is a remarkable mosaic of dynamic landscapes that shuttle before the eyes, summing up the versatile natural beauty that makes up the Loch Lomond & The Trossachs National Park. The centerpiece of the park is the eponymous Loch Lomond, a freshwater islet-studded lake that straddles picturesque hamlets like Balloch, Tarbet and Rowardennan along its stretch. Framing the lake are mountains soaring above an altitude of 900 meters (2,952 feet), collectively known as Munros. About 20 of them swell along the park's verdant expanse, of which Ben More is the highest at 1,174 meters (3,852 feet). The West Highland Way, a natural footpath that slices through the heart of the park regales hikers with captivating sceneries, even as peregrine falcons and ospreys circle high above the boundless expanses of the park.
