Yoga to the People firmly believes in its philosophy of making yoga accessible to everyone. Anybody, from a beginner to an advanced practitioner, can walk in for a session. Classes are donation based with no fixed fees except a mat rental and water fee, but there is suggested donation amount. Located in the East Village, the studio conducts Power Vinyasa Flow classes, a system of Vinyasa yoga. Sessions remain the same for all and practitioners are encouraged to progress according to their own level of fitness. With this decidedly different philosophy and method to imparting yoga, the studio has earned quite a good reputation in the city.
The Shala was founded by Kristin Leigh and Barbara Verrochi, dedicated yoga practitioners and acclaimed teachers who've trained under Sri K Pattabhi Jois, a renowned Ashtanga yoga practitioner. The studio features a host of classes and sessions in Ashtanga yoga as well as Vinyasa yoga. Apart from yoga itself, there are a number of other events and workshops, from meditations to kirtans, organized regularly in the studio. A phenomenal facility built on the former site of an asphalt storage area, the 74,000 square feet facility is now home to a myriad of health and fitness offerings including swimming, sports and a large variety of classes and equipment.
