Casa di Cristoforo Colombo

The building said to be the house where the great seafarer spent his youth is close to the Chiosro di S.Andrea and to the Porta Soprana o di S.Andrea. In fact it is a seventeenth century reconstruction after this and other buildings in the area were bombed by the Roi Soleil in 1684. It is interesting that this house was the only one left standing during the fascist period when the whole Ponticello area was demolished and replaced by the current buildings.

Palazzo Doria Tursi (Municipio)

Located midway along the Via Garibaldi, this building outdoes all the other palazzi on the Strada Nuova in terms of its monumentality and size, occupying a space three times as large as all the rest. It is a great example of a Renaissance Genovese palazzo, designed by G. and D. Ponzello in the mid 16th century for Niccolò Grimaldi, known as the "Monarca" on account of his immense fortune. After Grimaldi's financial ruin, the palazzo was acquired by Giovanni Andrea Doria, the Duke of Tursi, and nephew to the great Admiral. The interesting facade, with stonework by Finale and grotesques by T. Carlone, the impressive entrance stairway, the galleried hall, the two side hanging gardens have all made this a wonderful location for the Genovese town council. Inside, in the Syndicate Office, there are several letters signed by Colombus: the "Codice dei privilegi" conceded to the explorer by Spanish royal command, and an urn containing some of his ashes, found in Santo Domingo in 1887. In addition, there is the famous Paganini violin, a Guarnieri del Gesù from 1742, which is played once a year by the winner of the competition for young violinists, the "Premio Paganini", which takes place in October along with the celebrations for Colombus.

Palazzo Rosso (Genoa)

Palazzo Rosso (Genoa), known as rosso due to its color, is one of the last built in the Strada Nuova, now Via Garibaldi. It was built in the 17th Century, for the Ridolfo brothers and Gio Francesco Brignole Sale. In 1874, the Duchess of Galliera, the last of the line in her family, donated the building and the art collections to the city. There was a particular obligation on the city to make the official noble apartment into a museum. The splendid rooms are sumptuously decorated with frescoes by Ligurian artists, from the 17th Century like G. De Ferrari, D. Piola, A. Carlone and B. Guidobono. There are works from the 15th to the 17th Centuries including sculptures, mirrors, porcelain and paintings. Among the masterpieces on display, there are paintings organized in chronological order and by school of art. There is also an important photographic archive with more than 200,000 photographs. Valuable for their historical and artistic significance, they illustrate the history of Genova and Liguria from the middle of the 19th Century until today.

These include signatures, manifestoes, prints, paintings, uniforms, flags, and weapons which belonged to famous people. Galleria Nazionale di Palazzo Reale

Galleria Nazionale di Palazzo Reale is inside the 17th Century building, built by Stefano Balbi. It was then enlarged by the Durazzo family, before passing to the Savoy kingdom in 1824. It is the most important example of a stately home in Genova. This is largely due to the enormous size and splendor of the building. After you have had a look at the peaceful hanging gardens created in 1739, you will come to the monumental staircase which was created to go up to the aristocratic floor. The rooms there are richly decorated with frescoes, paintings, and stuccoes. They still contain many of the original furniture and picture galleries. You can also see the Battle room, the Veronese room, the splendid Mirror room and the Throne room. You can then go onto the terrace, where there is a stupendous view of the old city and of the port up to the Lanterna.

Albertis Castle

Albertis Castle, built between 1886 and 1892 for Capitan E. D'Albertis is a true architectural splendor. The captain donated it to the city on his death together with the ethnographic, archaeological and marine collections that he had put together during his many journeys to Africa, the Americas, and Oceania. It bears witness to the fashion for romantic gardens in this period which were particularly popular in Genoa. A visit to the castle will also give you a chance to see the exhibit models of ships, yachts, nautical instruments and photographs.

Unlike other museums, this one doesn't have a manual collection or objects to display. It is a multimedia depository wherein you can get to know the history of the city and its port. Many screens in varying sizes take up the exhibition rooms. Almost eight hours of footage is displayed in these projectors. Get to know the culture, art, folklore, tradition and history of the land through these interesting rushes. Surely a refreshing change to know the local history and culture.
