War Photo Limited

As you enter the Old Town from the Pile Gate and you walk along the Stradun, make sure to venture down Antuninska and stop in at the War Photo Limited Gallery. The gallery has changing exhibitions which document national and international war atrocities. This revolutionary art space helps evoke the reality of war in visitors. Visit the website to see the current display.

City Walls of Dubrovnik

The City Walls of Dubrovnik encircle the Old Town; an uninterrupted circuit of fortifications that protected the city for over five centuries. One of Europe's most complex and well-preserved Medieval fortifications, the City Walls of Dubrovnik, as they stand today, were largely complete by the 15th Century, although modifications continued to be made until the 17th Century. Supplemented by 14 quadrangular and two circular towers, several forts and a moat, Dubrovnik's defenses proved to be a formidable challenge, one of the few of its kind to have never been breached by enemy attack. The walls encompass the bulk of the Old Town, its seaside stretches promising spectacular views of the Adriatic. Along the way are the forts of St. John, St. Luke, Minčeta, Bokar, Revelin, and Lovrijenac. The entrance near Pile Gate at the beginning of Stradun is the best place to begin a tour of the Walls.

Poljana Paška Miličevića, Dubrovnik, Croatia, 20000

Ronchi's family established their hat making business in 1858 and have since then become Croatia's golden hatter. Marina Grabovac Ronchi is the heiress of this legacy of hat making. Ronchi employs the ability to let the fabric speak for itself, carefully crafting creative hats that have been featured in many fashion shows. Come in, try one on, and see for yourself what all the head-wear rave is about.

Sponza Palace

The Sponza Palace is located on the Placa-Stradun in the Old City. There on Luža Square you will find St. Blaise's Church and the Small Onofrio Fountain. The construction on the palace began in 1516 by Paskoje Miličević, built in Gothic-Renaissance style. Originally, the palace was the customs house, where all the goods that passed through the city were checked. One wing of the palace acted as the mint for the Republic. There is a Latin inscription in the atrium of the palace that translates to, "Our weights do not allow us to cheat or be cheated. When I measure goods I measure by God himself." Today, Sponza Palace is a venue for art exhibits and concerts, including the State Archives and the Defenders of Dubrovnik.

Cultural Historical Museum

The Cultural Historical Museum is a branch of the Museum of Dubrovnik, located in the Rector's Palace. The museum exhibits a beautiful collection of textiles, furniture, paintings and other items that represent the culture of Dubrovnik. The collection spans the 16th through 19th Century and includes Rococo and Baroque work by Italian masters.

Luža City-Bell Tower

Watching over the Ploče Gate, this 15th-century bell tower stands tall in the Old Town, serving as the centerpiece of the Stradun, along with the cathedral. The original bell tower dates back to 1444 though the current structure was rebuilt in 1928 in the same elegant Renaissance style. The only surviving antique detail is the bell, cast in 1506. The clock's face tracks the phases of the moon and two fascinating bronze figures called Isquo and Maro ring in each hour with their hammers in a feat of intricate mechanical engineering. These are coopies of the original that are now displayed at the Sponza Palace Atrium. At noon the tower's two-tonne bell is rung a dozen times, engulfing the stradun with its resonant chimes.

Mount Srđ

With the sea on one side and Mount Srđ on the other, Dubrovnik has been protected by these two natural barriers since the beginning. The mountain stands at about 1352 feet (412 meters), giving anyone daring enough a challenging climb, but be prepared as there is no shade, and during the summer months it can be very hot. At the top one can marvel at the wonderful view of the Old City and the rest of Dubrovnik, as well as the surrounding islands and the coastline nearly all the way to the Pelješac Peninsula. A cable car used to exist to bring tourists to the top where Napoleon had built Fort Imperial, but both were destroyed during the war in 1991. The fort is now the Croatian War for Independence Museum. It is recommended to begin your climb up Serpentine from the Pile neighborhood on Jadranska Cesta, or drive further south east toward Cavtat then up to Bosanka village which rests on the side of the mountain.

Mljet National Park

Nestled in the northwestern expanses of Mljet island, Mljet National Park is a canvas of otherworldly natural magnificence and a long-standing legend. Buoyant and bewitching, the park is believed to have been the mythical home of Calypso from The Odyssey, where Odysseus was captivated by a witch. Established in the November of 1960, the park is bejeweled with myriad cliffs, bays, sandy coves and fascinating coastal formations. The entire course of the park is laden with dense, luxuriant verdure which sits in stunning contrast to its deep blue features. The highlight of the park is the Great Lake, around which much of the island’s natural and ecological action is centered. Characterized by enigmatic karst formations and drapes of endemic foliage like Alps pinewood and star thistle, this lake is where nature and its unique silhouettes reside in abundance. However, the park is as much steeped in history as it is in natural magnificence; strewn across the island’s entrancing fabric is a treasury of archaeological remnants which hearken back to the heyday of the Greeks, Romans and Illyrians who once inhabited it. Nestled on the Great Lake is the idyllic St. Mary’s Island, and situated in its very heart is a picturesque Benedictine monastery which dates back to the 12th Century.
