Upsala-Lenna Jernväg

Upsala-Lenna Jernväg is a narrow-gauge railway runs between the city and the village of Lenna. The train was once used for industrial purposes, hauling coal, lumber and other products from the countryside into Uppsala, but nowadays is strictly a tourist attraction. This is a very fun way to get out into the surrounding region for a picnic, a hike or just a day riding the rails through the quaint towns on the railway line.

The building is the tallest church in Scandinavia and in addition to regular services, hosts concerts, lectures and community events as well.

Uppsala Castle

Uppsala's castle was never a true fortress in the military sense, but long served as a residential palace for the royal family of Sweden. It is in some ways the analog of Versaille in France or Greenwich in England, though not quite as grand as either. The castle was originally constructed at the behest of King Gustav Vasa 1549, and was subsequently expanded and remodeled by successive generations of Swedish monarchs until it was ravaged by fire in 1702. Reconstructed in the Renaissance style in the 1740s, what stands today is a faithful representation of the 18th-century palace. Since its conception, the castle has played host to numerous significant events in Swedish history such as the declaration of Queen Kristina's abdication in 1654 and the decision to participate in the Thirty Years War in 1630. With a history riddled with tales of bloodshed, political strife, and much intrigue, Uppsala Castle is alive with echoes of Sweden's past. The castle is now home to three museums - Uppsala konstmuseum (Uppsala Art Museum), Fredens Hus (House of Peace) and Vasaborgen.

Kungshögarna

Legend holds that these three prominences are the places of repose for the Norse gods Odin, Thor and Freyr as they wait to be called into battle on the last day, to take the field against the forces of evil in the last battle of Ragnarok. Folklore aside, archaeological and historical investigations revealed in centuries past that the barrows are in fact burial chambers for pre-Christian chieftains. Regardless of their purpose, these landmarks have been symbols of Swedish heritage since before the Swedish nation existed, and are often considered a symbol of national culture much like the three crowns on the Swedish coat of arms. A visit here is an easy stroll from the village of Gamla Uppsala and a perusal of the informational facilities detailing the scientific knowledge and mythological significance about the mounds is a nice complement to a picnic or hike in the area.

Disavägen 22, Gamla Uppsala, Sweden, 754 40
Gamla Uppsala

With roots entrenched in the pre-historic era, this town lies nestled in a marshy plain nourished by the Fyris River. The nerve center of the Norse Empire, Gamla Uppsala is the core of the prehistoric settlement beyond which the modern city bloomed. In its heyday, this village was a prime political and religious nucleus, and the royal ground of Swedish monarchs. A site awash in monumental archaeological remnants, this village is generously dotted with burial mounds and rune stones embedded on rolling, verdant pastures. The Gamla Uppsala Kryka hearkens back to the area's importance as a religious center, while the Gamla Uppsala Museum provides fascinating insights into Swedish history and heritage. Cradled in a landscape as unusual as this, the old town of Uppsala is indeed a stirring testament to the glorious nuances of the Norse religion.
