"Sandstone Forest"
Pilliga National Park protects the State Forests of the Pilliga, the largest unbroken tract of semi-arid woodland in New South Wales. The Pilliga is comprised predominantly of sandstone, lending deep rustic colors to the 3,000-square kilometer (1,158.3-square mile) landscape. This distinct geographical makeup is also responsible for the site's favored attractions: sandstone caves. Visitors can enjoy self-guided walking tours through the caves where ancient Gamilaroi rock art awaits. Also blending art and nature is the sculpture garden along the Scrub walking trail. The Pilliga Forest Discovery Centre allows curious visitors to learn all about the iconic region and its unique history.
