Opened in 1996, Vega consists of two state-of-the-art concert halls: Store Vega, a larger venue accommodating 1500, and Lille Vega, a smaller venue for 500 that belts out live acts on a regular basis, in addition to a stylish bar and a lounge. Vega attracts a range of pop, rock and techno bands from Denmark and abroad. Please confirm specific events schedules and nightclub timings on the website.
Cherish your Mojo, like Mike Myers in Austin Powers and visit Mojo's blues bar in Copenhagen, with live blues every single night. In the evenings, live bands are on from about 10:30p, but acoustic blues often starts at 9p. On Fridays and Saturdays, an admission fee is charged, but on all other days admission is free. Mojo has a happy hour between 8p and 10p, during which draft beer can be bought for half price. Dancard is accepted.
Café Intime is a treat. Here, in the middle of kitschy souvenirs and a cozy ambiance, they serve reasonably priced drinks. The owner and hostess will most likely sing cabaret tunes that make you think of Weimar Berlin rather than Copenhagen. The majority of the clientele is gay, but everyone is welcome.
Loppen has in its fairly short history fought against violence, close-down threats and aversion, but has survived because of the strength of its non profit-making organization. With its location in the free city of Christiania, just next to Pusher Street, these conflicts may come as no surprise. Overcoming all odds, Loppen has fought for the good reputation it has now achieved. The club aims at a minimum of four concerts a week, in which the style is rock as well as alternative and pop. Some famous names on the program in the past have been The Verve, Smashing Pumpkins, Blur and The Cardigans. For bigger international concert names, tickets can often be booked in advance through Billetnet or Sex Beat Records.
Bang and Jensen is on Istedgade; the former red-light district of Copenhagen. The interior is fun and kitschy, and the ambiance is friendly. The ancient pinball machines and the table football are popular with the patrons. Most of the clientele at this cafe consist of the young and the trendy, especially women. Breakfast, which is served all through the day until 6p, is the specialty of the house, though the menu leans more toward brunch offerings. The unique thing about Bang and Jensen is that you are given a form on which you fill in exactly how you want your food served. The bar takes over after 8p on Saturdays and after 10p the rest of the week.
Centrally located on Sankt Hans Square in Nørrebro, Rust is where Copenhagen's lovers of live music convene for a night out on the town. With a bar, disco and concert venue spread over three floors, Rust features a wide variety of musical styles ranging from techno to alternative rock, house to hip hop. The admission price changes depending on the night, as does the age limit. Check their website for the schedule of live shows.
Apollo is Copenhagen's first brewery and restaurant, located next to the Tivoli Gardens main entrance. Live jazz performances occur on the first Sunday of every month, accompanied with a special menu. The beer is cloudy and delicious, as it is both unfiltered and unpasteurized. The restaurant offers a small but varied range of dishes, some containing beer. If you come in the daytime, you might see the brewer himself working by the handmade copper pots, always eager to answer your questions about his beer.
Sunrise, Metropolitan, Between the Sheets, New Classics, Old Classics: this up-to-date bar has all the cocktail mixes, and they serve them with a smile. The word Vinklder actually means Wine Cellar, but that was a long time ago when in the 16th Century this location used to be a monastery. Now the monks have turned into cocktail waitresses and virtue has been replaced with vice - or maybe just nice. The bar serves delicious burgers and, if you are lucky, a plate of oysters from the restaurant upstairs. Try the Strawberry Daiquiri, a favorite with the regulars. The bar also has a wide selection of foreign beers such as Leffe, Budvar, and Hoegarden.
