Médanos de Coro National Park

"Sands of Time"

Along the highway that leads to Paraguana, near the northern coast of Venezuela, the Medanos de Coro National Park is a natural wonderland. Close to the city of Coro, the national park was formed in 1974 in order to protect the varied ecosystems of the region. While the mangrove swamps are ecologically important, it is the park's stretch of sand dunes that attract the most attention. Constantly changing due to the unceasing flow of wind, the Medanos dunes spread over 349 square kilometers (135 square miles). Seemingly endless, tourists and adventurers choose this destination for improving their sandboarding skills. Some dunes go as high as 40 meters (131.23 feet) and heavy rainfalls can result in the formation of scenic lagoons among the dunes.
